    Three Houses and Loss

    In chapter 9, Byleth faces immense grief for the first time in their life over the loss of Jeralt. Immediately afterward, they receive an outpouring of support from the other characters in the story, many of whom are no strangers to loss themselves. Each of these characters supports Byleth in a unique way, and in doing so they shed a glimpse of their own experiences dealing with trauma.

    Edelgard

    Are you waiting for time to heal your wounds? Or have you curled up in a corner and lost the will to carry on? Only you can truly understand your own sadness. Others can sympathize or even empathize, but all anyone else can offer are the tears of an outsider looking in. So I have no intention of crying for you, or of standing still with you. All I can do is promise to reach out my hand when the time comes for me to move forward.

    A lot of fans are (understandably) unhappy with Edelgard's harsh words during this chapter. But I want to point out that her response is consistent with how she personally deals with loss. Edelgard lost her family and her childhood while she prayed to a goddess who never answered her. She came out of the experience with no reason or will to live, and the only way for her to move on was to close off the parts of her that remind her of her old self. That's why she has trouble opening up about her past, and it's why she barely remembers her time with Dimitri despite it being such a happy part of her life. In her own words, the Edelgard that felt and remembered these things died long ago.

    Dimitri

    Professor! Welcome back... I was... We all were... (sighs) You've been on our minds. Know that your enemies are my enemies. I will do all I can to help you find justice. There is no one else I can... My strength is yours alone. I will fight as you command... I will kill anyone should you ask it of me.

    Dimitri, too, is racked with grief over his own tragedies, but his perspective on loss is quite different. Dimitri suffers from survivor's guilt. He's haunted by the ghosts of his loved ones, and he believes that he can only appease them by killing the ones responsible for their deaths. This is an especially dark time for Dimitri, and he already begins to show signs of his AM descent. While some. like Felix, may believe him to be irrationally bloodthirsty, the truth is that Dimitri is too kind to accept that he deserved to live while those around him died, and too compassionate for the lives of the fallen to continue living his own life.

    Claude

    Not the type to wallow in solitude, eh? That's a relief, let me tell you.

    I haven't lost a parent yet, so I can't even begin to understand how you must be feeling... But even while you're standing still, the world keeps on moving. I always find that oddly comforting.

    As the only character on this list who hasn't lost a close family member, Claude gives the outsider's perspective. Claude doesn't ask Byleth to look for revenge and he doesn't claim to have any words that will heal their pain. But there's a deeper side to Claude that shows more in his actions than in his words. Claude is the only character to go through Jeralt's diary, and he's fairly insistent about it too. And that's because he deals with grief by searching for answers, rather than succumbing to emotion. Claude has had his share of suffering too, especially dealing with discrimination growing up, and his response even as a child was to stay logical and calm rather than to "wallow in solitude," as he puts it himself.

    Rhea

    Professor... How are you holding up? I know how heavily grief weighs upon one's heart... I lost my mother some time ago. It was... Forgive me my moment of weakness. Even all these years later, I cannot recall that time without feeling the pain as if it were brand new. Just know that I am praying for your mind and your heart to find peace.

    At a glance, these are simply wise words from someone who also experienced the loss of a parent. But we know from Rhea's backstory that there is much more to it than that. In truth, Rhea has never found closure over the loss of her mother. She feels deep sorrow and guilt over Sothis's death, and her goal for the last millennium has been to reverse fate by resurrecting her. All things considered, it's actually somewhat odd for Rhea to lament the loss of her mother to the individual that she hopes to use to rebirth her. But while Edelgard and Dimitri give the advice that compels themselves to keep going, Rhea gives the advice that she has never been able to accept herself: for her mind and heart to find peace with the past.

    It's an emotional chapter for Byleth, made more so by the fact that in many cases it's one broken person comforting another. What's beautiful is that in turn, Byleth is eventually able to help each of these characters find the solace they seek:

    • In CF, Byleth becomes Edelgard's confidant, allowing her to open up and be herself again.
    • In AM, Byleth saves Dimitri from his path of revenge and encourages him to dedicate his life to himself and those still alive.
    • In VW, Byleth journeys with Claude to find the answers about the church and TWSITD that he's looking for.
    • And in SS, Byleth enables Rhea to find closure over Sothis's death and finally move on.

    So many of FE3H's characters have tragedy in their pasts, and I believe that one of the main messages of the game is how to respond and overcome it. Will we stay broken and allow depression and regret to eat at us? Will we close ourselves off to the pain, or lose ourselves trying to change fate? Or will we find the strength to move on, and to stay true to ourselves even as we recognize the weight of our loss?

    Which character has the most inaccurate fan portrayal?

    As the title says, which has had fan portrayal overtake their actual in game personalities and stories? Personally I think the Golden Deer as a whole but especially Claude, Lorenz and Leonie. I think people have really reduced the GD to complete jokes, like it is a bit more lighthearted than the other routes but it's still just as serious as the other 3. In addition with Lorenz and Leonie, people want them to be meaner characters than they actually are.

    I had originally done this for the FE3H sub's original house contest (hence the formats and layout), but it seems like it won't be updating for awhile. I was planning on posting this once the contest ended/when I completed all my planned add-ons but I just no longer have the same interest in completing this. There's a lot missing, relics, paralogues, a good chunk of supports, etc. and the plot could be edited more but the full dialogue for pre and post timeskip are complete. Everything, art, writing/plot, stats (with heavy referencing to Serenes Forest + FE fandom wiki cause I'm not particularly into stats or builds lol) was made by me. Hope you guys like it.

    There is nothing on the website, but I called my neared EB Games earlier and they said that they were taking pre-orders in the brick-and-mortar shop. He also told me they had already sold 3 that morning (this was at 10:00 am EST) and so I should get there today and ideally as fast as possible.

    You don't have to put down the full amount at the store to reserve it (although I paid in full so my brother can pick it up instead of me in December).

    The reason I'm making this post is because I a thread earlier that said that the EB Games should have them up by Monday, but it might be too late by then. If you're lucky enough to live near one, try giving them a call; from what the employee told me, there's a very real chance it'll be sold out by the time the website updates.
