Maybe unpopular opinion: Bring back class/weapon uniqueness.

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 09:10 AM PST

I really would like to see classes/weapons a bit more "locked" than they are now for future FE installments. It feels weird to me that anyone can use/be anything. I love a lot of the changes the series has made over time, but this is one that feels just offputting. There are times where I feel like I am forced to choose whats "optimal" versus whats "canon". A great example of this is in Three Houses (which I'm replaying on maddening now) classes like Warrior feels completely outclassed to by Wyvern rider/Lord in every way except some extra crit, but some units just dont feel right riding on a wyvern. Not to mention the fact that when it comes to weapons, it just doesnt feel right that my Gremory can have an A rank in axes to use against high res targets.

So my hope for the next fire emblem game is maybe going back to just a branching system of class progression. Each character being given the choice between 2-3 classes when they promote rather than complete freedom. This allows promotion not only to make more sense canonically, but can even perhaps be brought into the characters development and growth. Maybe a mage who builds an A bond with a pegasus knight could open up a "third" promotion option to give them the option of dark flier instead of the "base" options being warlock vs gremory. So not only could you have things make more sense ingame, but you open yourself up to some unique and neat bonding moments.
When it comes to weapons, Id love to see classes locked into certain weapons that fit what the class was built for. Or at the very least maybe a neat idea would be to "cap" class skills for certain weapon types. So for example a Swordmaster could use swords at an S level, but if they are using lances its treated like its a D level, and bows at a C level? Mages could have maybe one melee weapon type at C level, but thats it.

    Anyway, just random rambling. Thoughts?

If you were forced to choose a Three Houses route as the "canon route", which would you choose? (POTENTIAL SPOILERS)

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 11:51 AM PST

I'm curious where the fanbase stands on this, since 3H is unique in that it essentially tells a bunch of what-if stories and doesnt actually have an established canon story line.

    So which would you choose?

I'd go with Golden Deer personally. It tells the most complete story and the final boss in that route feels like it's supposed to be the "real" final boss of the game, what with the friggin opera and all.

Theory: The Disappearance of Conquest Rinkah

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 10:45 AM PST

Rinkah is considered a semi-important character in Fates. Not only is she the heir of the Flame Tribe, but she is the one who captured Corrin and returned them to Hoshido. She is also introduced very early in the game with Kaze, who also is given some relevancy in all routes. However, unlike most of the game's cast, you only fight Rinkah once, in Conquest Chapter 11. Upon defeating her, she questions why she wasn't killed, then wonders if they have been wrong about Nohr, only to quickly refuse such a possibility, claiming it to be Corrin's path. After the battle, she makes some comments of how none of the Hoshidan forces were killed in the battle, and then vanishes for the rest of the game. So, here's a few theories as to what may have happened.

Rinkah was supposed to be recruited in Conquest. Yeah, this one's a bit of a cop-out, but I honestly wouldn't surprised if it was the case. Rinkah is one of two characters from the first 6 chapters that isn't available in Conquest, the other being Sakura. I speculate that the devs originally intended to only have one Conquest-locked character (Gunter) and one Birthright-locked character used in the beginning of the game, but realized later that Rinkah was the only playable Oni Savage* in the game and locked her to Birthright. It would've made sense for her and Kaze to join at the same time, as neither really wanted to fight Corrin in Chapter 11. I would've delved into a counterpoint of how Rinkah may have chosen to not defect because of potential risks to the Flame Tribe from Hoshido, but then I realized that Fates rarely cares that much.

Rinkah returned to the Flame Tribe and convinced her father to remain neutral in the conflict. This one's pretty simple; Rinkah saw that, despite fighting for Nohr, Corrin was honorable and spared her life a second time. This led to her returning to her people to prevent them from allying with Hoshido. Nothing really that interesting.

I've saved my best for last: What if something unexpected happened? What if Rinkah was needed to succeed her father as Flame Tribe Chieftain?

So I've mentioned earlier that Rinkah was "the only playable Oni Savage* in the game"? Well, that asterisk wasn't a slip-up. Due to the capture mechanic, other Oni Savages and Oni Chieftains are playable. Including one distinct, named character: Kumagera.

That's right! This whole post was a ploy to get you interested in the Capturable Bosses in Fates!

Okay, but in actuality, I truly believe that Kumagera is the Flame Tribe chieftain, and he decided to take a massive risk. He allied himself with Hoshido and plotted an assassination of King Garon. However, this plan had not only the potential to escalate the the war if things went awry, but was practically a suicide mission. So, he ordered Rinkah to return to the tribe to take his place as chieftain.

I feel this theory works well in Fates' frequent attempts to have Birthright and Conquest mirror each other, as this would be the equivalent to the common belief that Kilma was executed in Birthright, leaving Flora to adopt the title of Ice Tribe Chief prematurely. However, I do acknowledge the presence of several holes and counterpoints to my theory.

Counterpoint 1: Why would a Tribe Chief lead a suicide mission? The biggest question first, of course. I think the answer here is a blend of national hubris and a result of prior battles. The people of Hoshido are depicted to be incredibly proud, and none seem to depict that more than the Flame Tribe: isolationists that typically rely only on themselves. Then, look at the number of victories Hoshido has claimed in Conquest up to Chapter 14 - none. Zero. In all his hubris, Kumagera likely thought that the tactics of Yukimura and the Hoshidan generals were pathetic, and attempted to prove his dominance.

Counterpoint 2: The game says Kumagera is a Hoshidan General. That's right. Kumagera's description reads: "Hoshidan general trying to assassinate King Garon." The Japanese text is similar, reading "An Oni Chieftain of Hoshido targeting King Garon's life." However, it doesn't actually specify in Japanese that he's a general of Hoshido, just that he is from the Kingdom of Hoshido. Still a pretty weak argument on my end though.

Counterpoint 3: The Hoshidan General Trio. This one will take a little bit of Japanese to explain. So in Fates, there are three non-royal generals seen: Haitaka, Kumagera, and Omozu (originally named Mozu, but then they changed Mozume to Mozu, so they needed to change Mozu...) And they are all connected by one thing. No, not that they're Hoshidan generals. They are all named after birds! Mozu (百舌) is the word for a shrike (sometimes specifically the Bull-headed Shrike), Haitaka (鷂) refers to the Eurasian Sparrowhawk, and Kumagera (熊啄木鳥) is a Black Woodpecker. As such, this heavily ties Kumagera into a trio of Hoshidan soldiers, distancing him from the Flame Tribe. On a happier note; I found this really nice piece of fanart of these three!

So, what do you think? Am I onto something? Or am I just spewing out nonsense in an attempt to make a nobody relevant? yes i know its the latter but at least i was creative! Also last talking point; isn't it kinda weird that the Ice Tribe received an official name (Freesia), but none of the other tribes?

What’s your favourite FE character archetype?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 06:26 PM PST

If you don't already know, FE uses similar character archetypes for most of their games since the beginning. They span from writing similarities like Jorges, who are royals hiding their identity, to gameplay similarities like Jagens, who are great initially but fall off hard.

There are a decent number to pick from, which is yours and why? Do you just like characters, is it for the gameplay utility, or a bit of both?

Personally, always gotta go for the Minervas. Late game recruits who betray their country, are always wyvern riders, and are pretty damn strong and cool.

Why do people love Genealogy of Holy War So much

    Posted: 28 Jan 2021 11:08 AM PST

Hey everyone! I've been a long time fire emblem fan and have played a bunch of the games but by no means most of them. (I just beat all houses in three houses most recently and loved, also played PoR, SS, blazing sword, and sealed sword/whatever Roy's game is). My faves have definitely been the first fire emblem title that came out in the US (7?) and three houses.

Now, since I don't own a 3DS and wanna play more of the series, I'm looking at the ones only released in Japan and have seen ppl loooooove GoHW (if that's what they're calling it lol). I actually managed to get a translated version on my comp, and started the first chapter a few times and have noticed that while I like some characters already, the big maps are daunting and I'm annoyed I have to do more calculations than in later games for battles haha (things I'm sure I could get used to).

My question is, why do people love it so much and should I stick with it? Totally open minded and just wanna hear what makes it special bc I do want to motivate myself to get accustomed to the gameplay differences! Anything I should look out for/know in a first play through?
