In what games do stat caps matter? How do they affect strategy/game feel?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 08:19 AM PDT

/u/KrashBoomBang suggested that this would work better as a full thread, so I'm doing that.

This is more of a question to start discussion rather than the post being an essay itself, but I thought it might lead to some interesting takes. In what games do stat caps actually matter? Throughout the series, stats, growths, and caps have fluctuated all over the place, going as low as global 20s in FE1 and FE5, or so high that they're basically nonexistent in FE16.

And for games where stat caps actually matter, how does this affect game feel? In essence, what kind of impact do these stat caps have on strategy and the like? How much of a difference is there between bases and caps, and how much does that difference affect the feel of a unit growing? Does it feel restrictive, or does hitting stat caps earlier feel more satisfying to you?

In particular, I'm interested in how FE4 fits in, since that game seems to have high bases but with caps that are around the GBA era, or only somewhat higher than the other Kaga-era games. But I'd appreciate any input on how caps affect game feel/strategy in other games as well.

"What If?" Wednesday, Chapter 31: Leaf Me Alone!

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 07:24 PM PDT

Welcome back, one and all! Well, another week, another... wait, it was three weeks ago that I last posted? I could've sworn I was holding my laziness to every other week! Clearly, my Fatigue wasn't relieved as easily as usual. Regardless, I'm here right now, and ready to give my all for a half-hearted attempt at making an effort toward "What If?" Wednesday, the not-regular-enough series on speculative gameplay discussion. So, how about this one:

Kitsune leaves. You know 'em, you hate 'em. Or maybe you love 'em, which I don't understand. Or or maybe, you don't know 'em, which I totally understand. Anyway, this was a minor feature in the "Kitsune Lair" chapter of Fates: Conquest. Whereby, the enemy units were able to "Disguise" themselves, represented as a leaf icon, thus preventing themselves from being attacked, but also from attacking. It wasn't a totally unique feature - games as early as Genealogy had featured "neutral" units who would suffer attack from neither army, while Radiant Dawn provided instances of an enemy unit being un-attackable due to allies in range. But it's still a really rare power, to essentially ascend above the fray itself, at least temporarily.

But what if a similar ability were brought back, albeit in a new form? Namely, what if there were a consumable item that temporarily granted its user a "Disguise"-like ability? I'd call it the Kitsune Leaf, with the same usage count and price point as the Vulnerary - but a bit rarer. Assume you can buy it where Pure Water is sold. By using it at the end of your turn, you can't be targeted by enemy units. So they can't attack you, but neither can you attack them back. Should you be refreshed that turn, you still can't target enemy units. You can still block their movement, so long as they don't have the Pass skill. The effect wears off once the next player phase starts. If such an item existed, in any game of your choice, would you find yourself using it? And if so, in what contexts? And would you like to see this sort of ability return in future titles, either among enemies or your own army?

Thanks for reading, everyone. I'll share my own thoughts below in a bit, but I'd love to hear what all of you think!

Azura makes me have some questions.

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 05:23 PM PDT

Azura is a unit that I'm very happy with in my current play through of Hard Conquest. An early dancer adds a lot of depth to the early parts of the game, and Azura herself is quite good at supporting units with passive healing and the later buff she grants when she sings. However she makes me ask some questions and I wanted to take to the community for some guidance.

1: Is it worthwhile to train up her Lance rank? Despite Azura being in THE definitive support class, she's built like an utter nuke. Her stats seem well supported for her reclass as well, being the first character I've encountered to cap a stat in a promoted class (being speed in both Kinshi and Falcon Knight).

2: As an extension of the first question, would you say class-changing Azura is a serious option to consider? Again, not only do the extra skills seem nice for herself and passing things down, but so does her use as a pair-up unit at that point.

FE7 Redux Tier List Resubs Round: Florina, Dorcas, Erk, Eliwood, Legault and Karel.

    Posted: 14 Apr 2021 10:35 AM PDT

    Welcome to the Resubs Round:

This round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give clear explanations as to why. Feel free to comment on each other and discuss why you agree or disagree. Be polite, and remember, this is all in good fun. After the 24 hours, I will review all the answers and understand what the consensus reached has been, posting the result in the next round. If there is no clear majority, a tally will be made. If a tie ensues then the unit will stay in the tier they were originally in. At the very end, a hub finalized tier list will be created, with links to each and every one of these rounds.

    Tiers Being Used:

    Fantastic Performance: S

Insanely useful from the get go, always a dominant force from the moment they arrive and require little investment if any. Contributes in a significant enough manner that they always sticks out and have a substantial role.

Includes: Lyn Mode Florina, Nils, Ninian, Marcus

    Great Performance: A

Extremely useful and always a good addition to a team. Doesn't require too much investment and if they do then it's enough to make them stand out compared to most units. Biggest things holding them back are that they either don't stand out as much as the S tiers or even with investment they aren't as dominant in their role as the S tiers.

Includes: Lyn Mode Sain, Lyn Mode Kent, Lowen, Fiora, Heath, Pent

    Good Performance: B

Is pretty useful and has some sections of the game where they stand out and help. Overall solid, isn't the most significant unit, but definitely contributes in a helpful way. Aren't the highest priority when it comes to deployment, but will definitely be one of your main choices for deployment to fill out your team at multiple points in the game. Biggest things holding them back are good but not amazing stats that may cause them to be dropped later on for other units, not the best class access, not the best weapon access and maybe not the best availability. Good, but has some significant flaws that hold them back from being great.

Includes: Lyn Mode Lucius, Hector, Matthew, Oswin, Priscilla, Raven, Canas, Isadora, Hawkeye, Geitz, Harken, Vaida

    AOK Performance: C

Perfectly average, they can make contributions at base sometimes, but investing in them doesn't tend to improve them very much . They may not be deployed for the whole game, but it doesn't hurt to deploy them most of the time either. At the end of the day they are just serviceable, neither a detriment nor a priority when it comes to being used and are essentially filler.

Includes: Sain, Kent, Serra, Rath, Lucius, Farina, Athos

    Iffy Performance: D

Can perform a niche role and do something, but generally aren't that useful. Don't really do much and if they do something unique then it's usually done much better by a bunch of other units. Severely outclassed by most other units and while they can do something, it's usually pretty bleh in execution.

Includes: Lyn Mode Lyn, Lyn Mode Dorcas, Guy, Dart, Louise, Jaffar

    Lame Performance: E

Straight up bad, no way around it. There are very few places where they are actually useful, and they are actively difficult units to use effectively. Can probably do something at base such as heal other units, rescue canto others or chip stuff with effective weapons but it's such a bare minimum contribution that calling them good would be a stretch. They can do something, that's the most you can say for them. Other then that they're bad.

    Includes: Lyn, Wallace, Bartre, Renault

    Meme Performance: F Rank

These units are just really bad, complete bottom of the barrel. So bad that even with an insane amount of investment they either end up still bad or at best incredibly mediocre and this is accounting for immense babying and all stat boosters going to them. E ranks can at least do something that counts as contribution. These units can't even have that as a claim to fame, they're so bad that they just do little if anything in a non casual/non meme context.

    Includes: Wil, Rebecca, Nino, Karla
