Finished Three Houses (GD) and have officially become a FE fan.

    Posted: 30 May 2021 06:38 PM PDT

I've just finished one playthrough of Three Houses and I just had to talk about it.

So I went with the Golden Deer route. I originally planned for the Blue Lions route cause I hear it has the best story but after the first conversation with Claude I just fell in love with him and new I had to fight beside him. The other two seemed slightly too pompous for me (although I now know I'm wrong on that front given what becomes of the other two).

But Claude he was just...perfect. He comes across as very lax and lighthearted but despite that he takes his duty very seriously and never stops working hard to reach his aspirations and despite how intensely he actually works, he never creates a stressful or overly demanding atmosphere within the group. That just shows his charisma.

Claude is the character I never knew I needed in a video game. If I ever met someone like him, I would beg him to be my mentor. I would genuinely love a figure like this in my life.

Furthermore the way our relationship grew just hits me deep. Towards the end of the game when he calls me Teach less and starts calling me "my friend" it really just melted my heart.

I'm honestly hesitant to start another playthrough with another house because I don't want Claude to die in another route.

If I go into detail about the characters I'll be here all day but I loved my entire class other than Leonie (imagine having someone in your life who only ever talked about how great your dad was...it would get annoying really quickly). I loved Hilda being lazy in cutscenes but an absolute unit in battle. She pretty much solo'd the whole mid game. I loved Lysithea coming to terms with wanting to live again and no longer being ok with dying given her backstory. I loved Marianne growing out of her meekness once you help with the paralogue mission. In the end though I married Catherine. On a related note, reading in the "epilogue" Manuela never married or had children really broke my heart. It's something she really wanted.

The story I thought was great. It had many sides and layers without ever feeling convoluted. It was definitely more mature than the stories I'm used to from other JRPGs and the way it was told was just as mature. The writers trusted you that you would remember the lore and story beats and therefore mentioned something once or twice to explain it and then it was only mentioned again if it came up naturally in another conversation, overly expositional dialogue wasn't repeated ad nauseum as if the writers thought they were dealing with idiots. I ended up dropping Persona 5 after 30 hours because I was still getting clunky expositional dialogue about the metaverse, palaces, calling cards etc. Had me like. The 3H twists were absolutely insane. My jaw was wide open when it was revealed Edelgard was the Flame Emperor or that Rhea is the Immaculate One. I've read some criticisms about how the story doesn't wrap everything up but...it pretty much did? Obviously I'd like to see how Dimitri became that eyepatched hellbent on revenge guy, and what made Edelgard become the Flame Emperor but that's what their respective playthroughs are for.

As I'm still a SRPG noob so I can't comment too deeply on the gameplay but the dopamine hit when you beat an entire stage without losing a single member, and on the opposite end when you're the last one left, your HP is low, you'll die in the next turn unless you hit the enemy commander with a critical...and you somehow do is just insane. That was me with the final boss. Is this what crack feels like?

I have other games to play but I'll definitely return to this one next year for the BL route and then the year after for the BE route to prevent burn out.

I haven't played the other Fire Emblem games but if they are somehow better than this (and from what I've read here they are) then I'm in for ride. How are they better? This one nailed the story, characters, gameplay, ost, everything. The only bad thing I have to say is the monastery got a bit monotonous after a while. But by part 2 you don't really need to partake in it.

What're the most unconventional S-Support pairings in Awakening?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 07:15 PM PDT

I'm replaying through Awakening again. Usually I just go through the normal routine of creating an OP male self-insert avatar and following every character's conventional class paths, but this playthrough I'm either using characters I never used at all or making the characters I did always use into something way different. Such as making a female Robin Griffin Rider.

So, usually I min/max children characters and follow a strategic approach to have every child and have them at their best. I still want to have every child character. I would like recommendations for unconventional S-Supports to create the most unfitting or ironic class paths for their children.

Anyone know where to find a completed translation of the Oosawa fe4 manga?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 02:41 PM PDT

I was reading the manga while playing the game (got to gen 2 and read gen 1 of the manga) and after finishing I started reading gen 2, but the site I read it on stops at chapter 73 (End of volume 12). Anyone know if there is any place where it continues on to volume 13?
