Everyone Plays Fire Emblem - Week of May 28th, 2021

    Posted: 28 May 2021 07:24 PM PDT

Welcome to the next installment of EPFE! This is a casual space for discussing any ongoing Fire Emblem (or related games) playthroughs. Screenshots, impressions, frustrations... gameplay stuff that would otherwise be removed as a standalone post under Rule 8 can be shared here.

While you can of course ask for advice here, specific questions might get faster responses in the General Question Thread here.

As always, remember to tag your spoilers, and have fun!

Last week's thread can be found here.

FE Showerthought: Everyone made a big deal of Cyril being unable to read, but I'd bet there's a surprising number of "commoner" units in the series who also can't read and it just never comes up for them.

I've been watching a lot of historical fiction shows lately, and there's a pervasive theme, especially in the Middle Ages ones, of there being a few side characters who can't read but don't really need to for their jobs.

I know FE is medieval fantasy, but I'd still wager that quite a few villager, commoner, and bandit-type characters can't read at all and it's just never discussed. Characters like Donnel, or Kostas, or Jesse.

I know the discussion about Cyril doesn't really put the blame on him and is mostly used to fault Rhea for never teaching him how to, but for his vocation in the Church he doesn't really need to. And I'll bet there's loads of others who similarly don't because they're farmers-turned-fighters, or mercenaries who don't need to read anything other than maps and signposts, or orphans who didn't get the luxury of Mila's Divine Orphanarium.

I guess, to turn this into a discussion: who would you say probably can't read, throughout the whole series, but it never affects them enough to be brought up?

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon Merciless Mode LTC Chapter 10

There are a bunch of tough enemies on this map that if not handled right can become a real issue. There is a hero at the top of the map that is guarding the top of the prison, this hero drops a master seal so we absolutely need to kill him. The only units that aren't ORKO'd by him are Caeda and Wendell but Caeda is better utilized at the lower section of the map. Also despite capping speed she still wouldn't be capable of doubling the hero.

One trick employed this map is warping Marth to recruit Maria turn one but not opening the door right away. This tricks Minerva's AI as once Maria is recruited she switches to move towards Marth but since there is no route to Marth she doesn't move at all. This lack of movement means she won't get in our way later.

Speaking of Maria, we need to start training her staff rank as we want her to hit C staves by chapter 16. She's at 6/15 uses from C by the end of the map.

Caeda needs 19 speed to double pegs this map. This only happens about 70% of the time. In the event this would fail we could use Wolf as a horseman but his hit rates wouldn't be as good.

While most of our good units can take out the majority of the difficult enemies on this map there are a couple of enemies that need to be ganged up on by our unpromoted scrubs. This is the last map we can really get away with using these units to any real merit other than grinding themselves to level 10 for a future promotion and it should be evident why.

A small mistake is that I should have given the goddess Icon to Jagen instead of Wendell in retrospect but since Jagen leveled luck on this map it didn't matter.

    Overall CoS ~60% (80.2%, 81.0%, and 92.5% respectively)

    New Units:

Maria - A rather underrated unit by the community. Mainly gets compared to Wrys who for most people would have a higher staff rank by this point but by using Maria we actually save about five staff uses. Maria also supports a pretty good unit who joins next map and that support will come in handy. Though the primary reason I'm using her in this playthrough is just to showcase that she is a perfectly viable staff bot as many people think she is total garbage.

Minerva - A new Dracoknight and this one has stats. Minerva's base stats are really good and lasts a good way into the game. She comes with A Axes which allows her to hit hard and more importantly, hit accurately. This is a rarity for Axe users. She also ends up being a second unit that can reliably take out Armor knights after Caeda. She doesn't have a good lance rank so units like Jagen still have a purpose but she easily becomes one of our best combat units.

Maybe I haven't played enough of them, but are there any Fire Emblem games where you are NOT a prince or royalty of some type? (Aside from Three Houses)

Stuff just seems sort of samey to me in that aspect... Kind of like Elder Scrolls. You always start in prison.
