Everyone Plays Fire Emblem - Week of June 11th, 2021

    Posted: 13 Jun 2021 02:15 PM PDT

Welcome to the next installment of EPFE! This is a casual space for discussing any ongoing Fire Emblem (or related games) playthroughs. Screenshots, impressions, frustrations... gameplay stuff that would otherwise be removed as a standalone post under Rule 8 can be shared here.

While you can of course ask for advice here, specific questions might get faster responses in the General Question Thread here.

As always, remember to tag your spoilers, and have fun!

Last week's thread can be found here.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon Merciless Mode LTC Completed in 90 Turns

    Link to Full Playlist

The rules for this playthrough were that we were to recruit all units (excluding gaiden units) and none of them should be left dead at the end of the playthrough. An unspoken rule for my sanity was also that I wouldn't take any clear with a less than 4% chance of success(per save).

The main aims for this playthrough were to try and obtain the the lowest turn count under the above rules while attempting to maximize reliability along the way and/or show off so units in roles they usually aren't used in. The latter was mainly done through Cain, Barst, Merric, and Maria. I suppose Rickard also counts since many just use Julian instead. Overall I think the playthrough was a success on this front.

I made a chart which shows the average number of attempts that it would take to complete each chapter using the strategies in the playthrough. As you can see the first couple chapters are the worst but from C14 on clears become very reliable. The spikes at C9, 12, and 13 are caused by the need for critical hits as a result of playing for the lowest turn count but all those maps could have major reliability improvements by just losing one or two turns. C1 and C2 didn't rely on any critical hits, they are as bad as they are simply due to the fact that we are reliant on subpar hit rates. We would have to slow down a pretty sizable amount to actually get these chapters to be anything considered reliable.

The final turn count was 90 which was two lower than the 0% growth clear. The turns saved were in chapters 1 and 3. This does mean the turn saves are likely doable in 0%. Getting the faster clear of C3 does require us skipping a Vulnerary and the Devil axe though which were used in the 0% playthrough. I think it's probably possible to get by without those in 0% growths but it would require some reworks. There were 5 turn saves that were possible this run that I didn't take.

    • In chapter 1 we could 6 turn. The issues of the 6 turn is a pirate will occupy Wrys's village on turn 5 so he needs to be killed and there is no way to do that without getting a Crit or a massive rework to the strat. This also means we would skip the first village losing out on a ton of money that improved reliability throughout the run.

    • Chapters 4 and 6. In chapter 4 we used a warp to save 2 turns. If we instead used that warp in chapter 6 we could 2 turn the map saving 4 turns. This nets a 2 turn save. The issue is Marth needs to kill the boss which requires a +3 rapier and a strength proc. Then Marth is in range of an Armor, 2 archers, and a mage. The calculated CoS for Marth to both crit the boss, kill the armor knight, and survive was about 0.05% or 1 in 2000. Way too low for my taste. We would also miss out on all the items in Chapter 6 which would again, severely cripple the reliability of later clears.

    • In Chapter 10 Marth waits one turn to open the Cell door. This is because the Hero outside the door OHKO's him at 100 hit. If we had spent time to train Marth and forged a steel sword we could have Marth Crit kill the hero to survive. The reliability is obviously terrible and Marth would need to train several levels to even be able to survive a hit so the turn save was skipped.

    • In Chapter 11 we would have warped Marth and Wendell in on turn 1 and finished on turn 2. This puts Marth in range of a mercenary who doubles and OHKO's him. If Marth got one level he's like to not get OHKO'd but he'd need 4 speed levels to not get doubled. To top it off Linde is also doubled and OHKO'd and she has no safe spot to go so we need to rely on her getting a 1% Aura crit to keep her safe. Overall the strat was too unreliable for me to use.

The strats used in these clears were influenced by the clears of Dondon151, Gradivus, Moogleboss, and Ruadath in their runs of the game. Dondon's playthrough in particular was incredibly helpful as he laid the groundwork for most of the run with his 0% run. You can find their runs by clicking on their names.

Thanks everyone that followed this run. It was a lot of fun to do and I really do think Shadow Dragon is an underappreciated FE title. Even if it's got a lot of broken mechanics, there is still a lot to the game even when making use of all of them and it overall is a pretty unique FE experience.

What are your most loved and hated series tropes?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2021 07:26 AM PDT

Fire Emblem is a series with a ton of patterns, archetypes, and tropes. To name a few: the Christmas Cavalier duo, Jeigans, Red Wyvern Lady as a recruitable enemy, sword wielding Lord, edgy enemy Swordman. Some of are beloved staples of the series, others are a pain, and sometimes they get mixed up.

    For me

Christmas Cavaliers: Sully and Stahl, Sain and Kent, Abel, and Cain. Usually one has high speed and the other has high strength. I love this trope because it embodies what makes the FE series so interesting. That you can have two characters with the same class, but their different stats and growths means they have different utility. It's what makes the FE series different to other strategy games like Advance Wars and Command & Conquer. Two cavaliers are not interchangeable. Every unit in your army is kind of unique. I also like that they mix it up from time to time. In Fates, there are two Ninjas with different join times and Saizo is not available on Conquest. In Echoes, it's two Armor Knights instead.

Swordlock Lords: Marth, Roy, Eliwood, Ike, Eirika, Chrom. Having a 1-range swordlocked foot unit who promotes way too late and has to be ferried around to siege things has definitely gotten stale over the years. Ike at least separates himself from the pack by having a different personality and Chrom can promote early and change class. For the rest, you can hardly tell them apart. Over the years I've really enjoyed it when the Lords have dared to be different. Micaiah as a magic unit was very interesting, Hector and Ephraim are really cool, and three houses has some of the most memorable and interesting Lords in years.

Jeigan Characters: Jeigan, Arran, Marcus, Seth, Titania. FE games often give you a very strong prepromoted unit, usually a Paladin, who falls off as the game progresses (Except for Titania and Seth where they just get even better). It's a tool to teach new players that they shouldn't overuse strong units and should train the rest of their army as well. I like Jeigans because they're a huge part of FE strategy at all levels of play. On high difficulties Jeigans are important because you have something to fall back on when the game gets too crazy. On LTC and Speedruns you have to abuse them to push forward as fast as possible. And in most FEs you will get penalized for overusing them. The games without Jeigans (Fates, Three Houses) feel like they're missing something. I also liked how in Radiant Dawn, the Jeigan was a thief and I wish they'd try other classes from time to time.

Why I like Edelgard, Character design

Why I like Edelgard, Character design

One thing I like about Edelgard is how cold and ethereal she looks. The value of her eyes is pretty close to the value of her hair making her look a bit dangerous.

    https://preview.redd.it/e3keo4ihx2571.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=0c8a3ba62b261389b9e635a3daaf16e0d557fb90

But it looks like they're darkening the purple a bit in this specific model, design still looks just as cool because of the purple Lol I love Edelgard. Characters with same eyecolor/hair value also look like its glowing (Byleth, Flayn, but not really Seteth maybe) Also Hilda and Caspar too but idk

    https://preview.redd.it/eszkhi0sx2571.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=72fdf84f9e36af8653f7562c26fe34e0c899b7e0

Also just to nerd out about the color purple too, if you notice her kid design, school design, and time skip... The amount of purple she has decreases, I wonder what that means.

Edelgard makes such a statement! She stands out in such a cool way. Like, in the academy phase, she's the only girl to wear pants instead of a skirt!
