Everyone Plays Fire Emblem - Week of June 11th, 2021

    Posted: 13 Jun 2021 02:15 PM PDT

Welcome to the next installment of EPFE! This is a casual space for discussing any ongoing Fire Emblem (or related games) playthroughs. Screenshots, impressions, frustrations... gameplay stuff that would otherwise be removed as a standalone post under Rule 8 can be shared here.

While you can of course ask for advice here, specific questions might get faster responses in the General Question Thread here.

As always, remember to tag your spoilers, and have fun!

Last week's thread can be found here.

Fire Emblem Complete Map Discussion Week ???: AW1 C1: It's War!

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 12:35 AM PDT

This is Fire Emblem content I swear, Advance Wars is totally a part of the Fire Emblem franchise

    Objective: Seize/Rout

Andy Marth's army starts out in the bottom left, with Olaf's army bandits on the right. A river separates the upper left and bottom right portions of the map, with 2 bridges connecting the 2 at the top and bottom. The seize point is located on the top right.

Advanced Campaign Hard Mode makes a few changes to the map, most notably replacing a few light tanks with medium ones while removing the player's own.

    Discussion prompts

    • Was this map fun to play on?
    • Were the Advanced Campaign Hard Mode changes appropriate in increasing the difficulty?
    • Could this map have been improved? If so, how?
    • Was the map a good introduction to the Advance Wars Fire Emblem franchise?

The Symbolism of the Azure Moon

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 10:54 AM PDT

I was thinking a bit on the symbolism behind the association of Dimitri and the moon, so consider this a compile of what I found upon research and discussion.

    • The Azure Moon of Illusion:

Before further discussion, I would like to establish for the sake of symbolism, the terms Azure Moon and Blue Moon are interchangeable as Azure is a shade of Blue.

Most people's popular understanding of the blue moon is that it is rare, with expressions in english like "once in a blue moon" being fairly standard, however it does have narrative significance for Dimitri because the origins of the phrase blue moon come from an anti-clerical pamphlet from the 16th century which reads as follows:

O churche men are wyly foxes [...] Yf they say the mone is blewe / We must beleve that it is true / Admittynge their interpretacion.

Blue Moon here is the false interpretation made by the catholic clergy on the nature of the moon, as it is in fact not blue, but due to the power that the church had that interpretation had to remain unquestioned, one can see why this would fit Dimitri's rampage-phase, his decisions remaining unquestioned for his nature as prince.

One can also bring to mind a relatively recent and wrong interpretation of the blue moon and it's origin, in 2007 Joe Rao speculated the Blue Moon came from the old english word of 'to betray', because the extra full moon:

"betrays the usual perception of one full moon per month."

He later admitted that this interpretation was innovative but still wrong, but one can also see why this would fit Dimitri, he betrays the usual perception of the blue lord we expect, as well as the perception we have of him in White Clouds.

but what is the blue moon itself? It's the third full moon in a season with four full moons, it is the extra thirteenth moon, thirteen is known to be an unlucky number, some people theorize it was because one of the thirteen people sitting at the last supper betrayed Jesus, some sources even say Judas was the thirteenth to sit on the table, others believe it is because the blue moon being the thirteenth extra moon caused many problems for farmers, interestingly, Byleth is the thirteenth vessel Rhea has created.

    • Paraselene, the dog chasing the moon: Paraselene is an interesting exclusive combat art to give Dimitri, mostly because of the implications of what it's based on, it's meaning, and alternative meanings.

    • •What it's based on: a Paraselene in real life is a phenomenon in which the moon's light reflects on snow crystals, creating additional moons, it's a beautiful event, it is very rare, but the additional lights are not the real thing, they're pale reflections, one could even argue the moon itself being a reflection of the sun's light also is not true light, but it is still enchanting all the same.

    • •What it means: Paraselene by itself means besides the moon, because the false lights are besides the moon, reflecting it's light, they are not real, they are out of reach, and yet they are mesmerising all the same, as for the dog-moon, dog in english since the sixteenth century meant to chase, pursue, or hound, so the phenomenon being called dog-moon means it's that which chases the moon, not a literal dog, how this all fits to Dimitri is up to interpretation, however if one connects the dog-moon to literal dogs, one has a connection to Sothis, as she is heavily connected to dogs.

    • •My interpretation: the moon in Azure Moon can mean multiple things, it can mean madness and delusion, betrayal of perception, a pale reflection of the true light of the sun, but it can also be serene, comforting, a light in the dark night, Dimitri is all of this, to me the moon to him is his idea of what he wants to be, what he is expected to be, it is not true light, it cannot bring as much warmth to Fodlan as the other lords represented by the sun and the dawn, but for now it suffices, so he goes from chasing illusions to chasing the moon, and by the end, he stays besides it.

If there is more you guys feel like adding feel free to add it in the comments

"What If?" Wednesday, Chapter 36: Master Seal, Master... Staff?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 05:47 PM PDT

    Chapter 35

Welcome to the E3 post-game show! Now, Nintendo's presentation gave us a lot to chew on - Tekken in Smash? New 2D Metroid? Advance Wars on the Switch? But one thing they were missing was any sort of new word on the Fire Emblem series of games. This is a bit of a mea culpa - I asked my uncle, who works at Nintendo, to make sure the higher-ups hold off on any new FE announcements. After all, I was fearful of Nintendo stealing my Thunder (and Fire, and Wind). Now that we all have nothing to look forward to on this front, how about some speculative gameplay discussion?

Promotion, or Class Change, is a commonplace feature throughout the Fire Emblem series. This is a procedure by which a unit enters into a new class, often gaining stat boosts, new skills, and more weapon types. This procedure can take different shapes, from game to game. In the Tellius games, promotion occurs automatically upon reaching a certain level. In Gaiden, Genealogy, and their respective remakes (oops, that's a half-spoiler - thanks, Uncle Convincingfirstname!), promotion can only occur in certain locations within the world. In most games of the series, however, promoting a unit requires you to have the right item. In the GBA games, promotion is done with a variety of item types - Mages require the Guiding Ring to become Sages, while Cavaliers can't become Paladins without the Knight Crest. Most games since, however, have replaced these varied tools with a single item - the Master Seal. One consumable, any class - so long as you are at least this tall (level 10) to ride the crest.

But what if promotions weren't done with Seals, or in certain locations, or by getting a high enough grade on the teacher's test? What if the power to promote was held in a staff - the Master Staff? Imagine that the Master Staff works like a Master Seal, only instead of applying to the user, it affects an adjacent ally. Like its inspiration, each one has just one use, and shows up in the same places as promotion items did before. It should be fairly accessible (requiring, let's say, C Staff rank), only be usable on the map itself (so not the starting menu), and it should give its user a fairly generous amount of experience upon use (say, a full 100 EXP for first-tier users). It can't be used on units who receive a story promotion, while the level requirements of promotion items (level 10 in most cases) still apply to the staff. If such a change were applied to an existing Fire Emblem game (wherein, all promotion items are replaced with Master Staves), how would it change the way you play the game? Which units would you see winning, and losing, from such an arrangement? And, is this a kind of change you'd like to see in future games; or, would you prefer the "traditional" system of promotion items; or, do you envision something new altogether when it comes to promotion?

Let me know what you think in the comments! I'll be posting my own thoughts below shortly. Thank you for reading!
