    Nobody understands Camus

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 03:37 PM PDT

So, clickbaity title aside there seems to be a dislike for Camus and Camus type characters somewhat in the community with a notable amount of people saying how they dislike Camuses in the recent post about least and most loved tropes in the series or this big rant about how Camus is a jerk. I think that due to some of the weaker members of his archetype, such as Selena, people have voiced their dislike for the original as well. Which is a shame in my opinion as Camus is honestly one of the most interesting characters to come out of the first 3 FE games and I'm here to explain why I believe that Camus deserves more love.

    Brief history

Camus is a knight that originates from Grust. At the time of the War of Shadows, he was the leader of the Sable Order, and according to Marth was reputed across Archanea as "the most able warrior alive". In the War of Shadows Grust's king Ludwik joined forcs with Dolhr and Camus complied with this despite his personal objections. His view was that, as a knight, he had no right to question his king's actions and was required to comply no matter what happens. Camus lead the Grust army until they arrived at the royal palace where princess Nyna was located. As Nyna's father was killed Nyna remained the only member of the royal family and Camus told her about how her father was a poor king and she needed to be better for her people. In order to protect Nyna Camus took custody of the capital as the leader of the occupation army. This worked and in the intervening two years he and Nyna eventually developed a mutual affection for each other. However, Medeus sent his army to apprehend Nyna, in response Camus escorted Nyna to find refuge with Hardin in Aurelis. In order not to risk the lives of King Ludwik's children Jubelo and Yuliya Camus had to desert with his knights (Belf, Roberto and Reiden). Because of this Camus was arrested, stripped naked, put in a cage, publically shamed and thrown into a cage until Marth ended up scoring too many victories against Grust, so Camus was put back as the head of Grust's military. Marth offers Camus to join him, but Camus refuses and ends up getting defeated. It's unclear what happens afterwards, but Camus somehow washes up in Valentia where he was found by Tatiana, with amnesia. He served under the military of Rigel under the name Zeke and married Tatiana. After the war in Valentia ended Camus got his memories back and went back to Archanea to fufill his last task. When he arrived back in Archanea Camus took a mask and adopted the name Sirius. As Sirius he worked to save King Ludwik's children and snaps Nyna out of Gharnef's spell. After Medeus' second defeat Camus disappears from Archane likely going back to Valentia.

    The Camus archetype

Camus is the originator of the so called Camus archetype. Characters that fit under this defenition are loyal members of the army that the protagonist fights against. Usually they refuse to join the protagonist's army due to loyalty and die because of that. This is obviously a fairly loose definition and as such it isn't 100% clear what constitutes as a Camus. Still, this is an archetype that is usually poorly handeled due to the writers wanting to make the story seem complex without spending the effort to make the game more complex. As such a lot of member of the Camus archetype have been labeled as stupid, including Camus himself. However, there's something people often miss...

    Why Camus stands out?

Camus is fiercely loyal to his country, but he has other reasons for not joining Marth's army.

First is the fact that by the time Marth forces the Grust amry to put Camus as the leader again, Marth has destroyed the majority of Grust's military and has essentially humiliated a nation known for it's military power. If Grust losses they won't only lose their pride, but the nations Grust counquered and exploited irresponsibly will want revenge. We see this in Book 2 of FE3 as Grust isn't doing very well after the end of War of Shadows and the morale of it's citizens are very low. The one hope Grust has left over is the legendary Sable knight Camus. If Camus deserted from Grust's military and joined Marth it would essentially mean that Grust is truly hopeless. And the citizens of Grust doesn't have anyone else to put their hopes in. The royal children are kidnapped, the king is terminally ill and there aren't any other knights known for thier strength or chivalry left

Secondly, if Camus deserted it could risk the lives of Jubello and Yuliya as Medeus has them as hostages and he's sadistic enough to kill them to make an example. Now couldn't Medeus do that anyway to show them as an example for Grust's failures? Maybe, but once Grust is completely defeated what's the point? Medeus cares little for Grust, the king is at death's door and there isn't really anyone left to hurt emotionally.

Now, Camus would've likely stayed on Grust's side anyway, but there are layers to his deicisons and he's a more complex character due to that. Along with that Camus has another advantage

The benefit of being in multiple games

Camus is the only character that appears in the firt three FE games besides the whitewing sisters. Because of this he has the benefit of having a lot of screentime. We see him start out as an enemy commander, then becomes an ally to Alm and ultimately joins forces with Marth as new person. Camus ultimately leaves his old life behind as he has a new one in Valentia and Camus actually tries to fix his mistakes and goes back to Archanea because of this. Camus does ultimately acknowledge his mistakes and works to fix them, which is only ever repeated with Lehran.

    His relationship with Nyna

So, some peple have issues withtheir relationships. Now, I won't go and argue about wether Camus made Nyna too emotionally dependant to him, how cold he is to her in their introduction, etc. Nyna and Camus are meant to be a tragic couple for the sake of more drama to the story, which has more consequence later. But ultimately Nyna is someone that Caus cared deeply about and was ready to risk everything in order to ensure her protection.

    So about Sirius

Yeah, yeah everyone makes fun of his bad disguise that doesn't even really work as even Belf figures it out pretty quickly. But that's not what I wanna talk about.

A lot of people still question why Camus had to take up another identity, as he was already Zeke. Well, Camus was a famous knight in Archanea and his face was likely famous too, along with that it would likely be weird if a high ranking knight in the Rigel army suddenly went to Archanea and assited in military actions. It could even potentially make it seem like Valentia has decided to enter the war as well.

OK, but he could've just gone as Camus instead or just revealed his identity to his brothers in arms or trusted associates like Marth, Nyna or the sable knights. Well, that would be very risky as the truth behind his identity could easely spread quickly and that's very dangerous. Camus acknowledges as such in his support with Belf.

Sirius: For argument's sake, if I were in fact the Grustian general you claim I am, Sir Belf... What do you think would result from my revealing myself? A resistance would rise, and I would be their symbol. I would provide the impetus needed to free Grust. I hardly think now is the time for further Grustian blood to be spilt.

Now, why doesn't he reveal his identity to Nyna at least. Well, Nyna unlike Camus never moved on. Camus found hapiness with Tatiana and a new life in Valentia. Nyna was however stuck in the past, wantitn to still be with Camus. Camus however can't be with her anymore as he isn't Camus anymore, he's Zeke and so he telly Nyna that Camus is dead in the hopes that Nyna will finally start looking towards the future.

    Conclusion

Camus is one of the more interesting characters to come from Archanea and Valentia due to having additional material which gives him more depth. Because of this we can see a tale of a noble knight, look through his lows and highs and hope that he managed to find hapiness in the end.

Is FE3H really that bad (a follow up) [spoilers for fe3h]

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 09:52 AM PDT

Okay, so I've played FE3H now. I want to thank you all for the encouraging and respectful comments which gave me the confidence to play it, and honestly, I enjoyed it! It was not, in fact, as bad as what people were making it out to be. The only things I had to do that really were emotionally distressing to carry out were parts of CF and AM route (and a fair amount of CF route, which was thankfully pretty short). I didn't have much trouble forming opinions on each route, house, house leader, and all that. The worst part, from my experience, has been the fandom- god forbid I have an emotional reason for disliking a character that isn't based on FACTS and LOGIC- which is fairly scary. Anyway if anyone has any questions about my experience with the game being an emotionally sensitive bitchbaby, feel free to ask because I really like talking about it!

    ELI5: Legion

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 06:07 PM PDT

Now to be completely honest with you guys, I'm not a huge FE fan and I don't know much about the series if I have to be totally honest, but I grew an interest to the character Legion, can someone please tell me a full summary and any info about this character? Story-wise, please spoil me as much as you like. Is he a villain? Or is he just misunderstood? I like his design a lot, and I strangely find him sexy! I read his backstory and I felt sad for him… I don't know why. Does he actually die in the end of the game? Like most villains? What was his fate basically? And why does he look like a character coming from a Team Ico game who finally found Majora's Mask and mastered wearing it? Possessing its power? I really like his design, also. Is he canonically masculine? What's under that body? I find him cute, but more importantly, what's under that mask? Why does he have yellow eyes? Is he possessed? What was his fate and has he ever been in any other FE game after the original game he came from? Is there a way to spare him in battle? Or is the game required for you to beat him in order to continue with the story?

Sorry for the lots of questions. I'm just interested in this character, also, what would you think his response would be if I asked him to marry me?

    Thanks for reading! Chao!

The Binding Blade Sacae Chapters: An Autopsy/Rant of Bad Map(s) Design through my Confusing Story Telling, Part 1: Background, Chapter 16, Chapter 17

The Binding Blade Sacae Chapters: An Autopsy/Rant of Bad Map(s) Design through my Confusing Story Telling, Part 1: Background, Chapter 16, Chapter 17

[whelp, I screwed up the title: should be chapters 17 and 18]

Probably going to be a terribly written piece, I have never been a strong writer, but I just need to let out some steam.

I just entered my school break and had nothing to do, so the logical conclusion was to enter a Fe6 Hard Mode True Ending Draft with 2 friends in order to re-experience the suffering that I was supposed to have in school.

Complaints involving Fe6's gameplay can include (but not limited to):

    > Strong Ambush Spawns

    > A lot of Reinforcements

    > Bad Accuracy

    > Bad Unit Quality / Unbalanced Cast

    > Winding Corridors

    > Oversized Maps

    > Lyn isn't in this game

All jokes and actual problems aside, Fe6 is my favorite Fire Emblem in terms of gameplay, for all its ups and downs. However, for all the times I have played through it, I have never gone to Sacae. I heard about the legends and avoided my first time playing, and my second time my Shanna and Thea simply outpaced my Sue and Shin despite using all 4.

Now for this draft, I was the first draft meaning by our rules, I would have my last unit simply be the remaining one not picked. I got both Shanna and Shin as my second and third round picks. I drafted Barth and Douglas later as jokes because there was no one better. Later on Dayan will remain as my last unit.

As expected out of a Fe6 HM draft, the early game was truly the suffering I seeked, especially chapters 4 and 7, but I was getting disappointed in the mid game that my suffering levels drastically dropped after chapter 7. You know, the joke about how Binding Blade fans only like Binding Blade because they like to suffer. It was when I got to recruit Shin that I decided that I would try to go the Sacae route, because I was curious and I had the tools to be able to do so. So I coked up a level 20/8 Shin and barely got the EXP needed to outclass my Shanna.

And so we enter the actual meat of what I wanted to write about: the Sacae chapters are the worst designed series of chapters in Fire Emblem, period.

And that's saying alot considering I like Suffering.

    Chapter 17: The "Easy" one

This one isn't too bad on its own, but we will get back into it later. The chapter tries to encourage you to go two directions to save both villages. Problem? The right has this massive swamp of Trees that Anima mages (and a sage) will engage you on. Anima magic is among the most accurate weapon types in the game with terrible hit rates, and they are especially the only ones with accurate 1-2 range.

See the problem? These trees just slog your army down so much that in reality the best thing to do to get the village is to just yeet a flier past all the enemies because you can't deal with enemies that you can't hit on player phase and the enemy just doesn't let you attack to begin with on enemy phase.

Also this map is Fog of War with Wyverns.

And Ballistas but honestly they aren't a problem (yet).

    Yeah . . . .

Also, if this chapter wasn't giving enough middle fingers that don't really mean anything in the long-run, Arcard in Illia, aka if you have highly-trained Lance users, will spawn with a Silver Axe, while Arcard in Sacae, aka if you had highly-trained Nomads with their only 1 range option being Swords, will spawn with a Silver Lance.

    Thanks, Binding Blade.

    Chapter 18: Turtle-Emblem

Now we are finally actually in Sacae, and we finally see qualities that will be shared with the remaining maps:

Nomads: Nomad Troopers are extremely strong generics supporting highly-accurate Swords and Bows, 8 movement, extremely high speed to make one-rounding really hard without a coked-up Swordmaster or Nomad Trooper of your own, and almost always with a group of 3 other unpromoted Nomads.

In this chapter, most of these Nomads will begin charging you instantly. How do you deal with highly-mobile enemies that you can't one-round reliably? You stay at the starting position, hide behind units with high defense on the bridge, and slowly gun down Nomads with the few units you have that actually can kill these Nomads, prioritizing Nomad Troopers because ha, they can walk on rivers.

Ambush Spawns: Sacae has a lot of ambush spawns, but what makes these ambush spawns way worse than any other ones in Binding Blade are that you can't predict where they are coming from. For people who don't know, in this chapter, if you end your turn close to the boss, the houses around the boss will spawn a random amount of Nomads in random houses. There is no safe place to hide because the range in which these nomads could potentially cover is insane. The end result is that you can just kill the boss quickly right?

    Erhhhh

Monke: He's a lot less bad than most people call him out for, but he's still annoying. Monke has a Brave Sword, Brave Axe, and an Elixir. Despite having a lot of speed, he's weighed down by the Brave weapons so much that fighting him is often just both parties doubling, which is quite cool on paper. The problem is that he's still super dodgy in a chapter that doesn't want you to actually battle the boss for a very long time.

The irony is that the best way to beat Sacae is exactly what I did: coke up a super-power Shin (Sin?) and just charge with bows to kill every Nomad, then clean up the Nomad Troopers that didn't die, then engage Monke with Shin *again* while using bows, and just leave him in range and hope that he kills Monke and the reinforcements.

In reality, what these high-movement reinforcement that spawn exactly where you are just means that the only way to play is to literally leave 90% of your army everyone behind or just one-round the boss (which is very unreliable).

    And worst of all.

I still have 3 more chapters to talk about.

And it only gets worse from here.

Is magic more useful in Radiant Dawn?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 10:51 PM PDT

I really like magic, and when playing Path of Radiance, I wanted it to be more useful than it was. Ilyana is my favorite character, and I used her anyway, but man, I felt like magic was mostly useless except on one of the late-game maps.

Is magic any better in Radiant Dawn? Specifically, is Ilyana worth training? I only just started chapter 3.

Your honest opinion on Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 10:50 PM PDT

I see people praising these two games overwhelmingly, to the point where some would say they are the holy grails of Fire Emblem. I also understand that the pair are considered somewhat "rare", due to average sales figures during their lifespans.

I only having played Three Houses, I feel as if I want to try older titles, I may have a better time doing so on a home console, rather than handheld.

I have found someone who is willing to sell these two games for a really good price and I'm just wondering. I'm sure that these games won't be terrible; but, are they actually that good? Or are they somewhat over hyped due to their rarity status? Your honest opinion would be appreciated.

    Question about magic types.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 02:41 PM PDT

Hello! I'm new to the series and I'm currently playing Fire Emblem Three Houses. You may have seen my post asking whether or not I should buy it.

Anyways, I had a question about magic. I chose Black Eagles so I have Linhardt (who so far I love) on my team. I'm currently building him as a support character but was wondering if I could teach him both Reason and Faith and have him learn some Black Magic as well? Or is that not the case?

TLDR; Can a character have both black and white magic in their moveset at the same time?
