Does Fire Emblem have a Masterpiece?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 02:43 PM PDT

Someone recently posted on Awakening asking for ratings. From what I saw the range was from 4-9, with most saying 7-8. There were criticisms on the story, characters, balance, and "broken" aspects of the gameplay. And, of course, there were comparisons to other FE titles.

All that made me think … does FE have a masterpiece that the community agrees on?

For example, in r/Metroid everyone generally agrees Super Metroid is an unassailable classic in terms of gameplay, world design, aesthetic, and impact on the genre. It's not everyone's favorite, some may even dislike it, but everyone respects it. Hence, it's a masterpiece.

Does Fire Emblem have a game like that?

Note: I haven't played FE5 or FE 9-10 but have heard criticisms of those games too.

What are some things that the Fire Emblem community would love to have in an FE 6 Refurbish? (that i happen to be finishing) As of now we have a few improved bases and growths, better graphics (credit to Smug_Mug) a few map changes, and rebalanced weapons and terrain bonuses along with a few others.

Which student is most likely to call Byleth dad/mom?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 06:21 AM PDT

You know that trope of a student calling a teacher (that they have a connection to) mom or dad? Well I'm curious about who you think would be the 3H student to fall into this trope.

My bet would be on Bernadetta. Not sure why but I can see them calling Byleth dad/mom in a really stressful situation for her (which is basically everything) and I think it's a cute scenario.

What about the rest of you?

I really enjoy Rath x Lyn solely for it's implications.

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 05:39 PM PDT

I'll start off by saying that I don't much care for their supports either, I don't particularly like them, but I don't dislike them as much as some others do.

When I first played fe7 I grinded many characters that I otherwise wouldn't have used to get an A-Support solely to give some FE6 characters a "canon" parent in the context of my playthroughs, Since I like to play games chronologically if they have a timeline. And in doing this I had to research who can get paired endings with who. This is actually why I paired Lyn with Rath, since Lyn was really the only choice, but actually thinking about the pairing made some things make sense in context of FE6.

Something a lot of people ask is "Where is Lyn during FE6" the obvious answer being she wasn't created yet, but that's a pretty lame answer, And so is "She died of an illness or something, lol". And her just chillin in the plains with Florina/Kent or just by herself with no interest in joining her old friend's son's army to help defeat Bern feels pretty out of character. and while its never outright stated, I think the implications of Sue's backstory are a far better justification.

Sue's backstory is pretty tragic, and likely unintentionally parallels Lyn's. With her whole tribe being slaughtered, and her only surviving family being her grandfather. And while it's never explicitly stated, it's likely that her parents were killed in the bandit attack as well, and if Lyn is her mother that would be a pretty good reason for her to never appear in FE6. And it makes Sue's backstory all the more tragic in the eyes of the player. It wasn't just a bunch of nameless generic nomads who were killed, but Lyn and Rath too! we know them! doesn't that just make you angry towards the Djute tribesmen from Ch 20Bx (and not just because that chapter is shit), and Bern as well for being allied with them?

I would love for this to be expanded in a possible remake instead of just having her appear as an easter egg or a late game prepromote or something, since it could be a real tearjerker on par with the end of Gen 1 if done right.

Also if the supports are a deal breaker for you, Lyn doesn't actually get with Rath right at the end of the game, since Lyn renounces Caelin to Ostia, then goes to become a nomad which is when they are reunited. so maybe returning to his tribe and the good ol' "absence makes the heart grow fonder" helped give him better social skills than a brick wall, and they gradually fell in love after the end of the game.

6 years later, what does everyone think of Fuga's Wild Ride?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2021 02:29 PM PDT

It's been like 6 years since Fates came out and The Wind Chapter became infamous almost immediately after release, but what does everyone think about it now? I'm still riding the high of a first attempt clear of it on lunatic, and while it's not my first win, I did end up abandoning at least one run to it after failing multiple half hour long attempts at beating it.

In terms of gimmicks I think there's a lot that makes it super fun - the narrow walkways combined with the lack of obstacles for fliers give you a lot of opportunity set up dual attacks, and because of all the chokepoints it's easy to bring a mix of frontliners, ranged attackers, and support units. The wind makes things interesting too, not just for when you take advantage of it, but even when it works against you. Sometimes the most fun in fire emblem is using everything you have on hand to worm your way out of a bad situation when everything goes wrong.

Problem is, like a lot of Conquest maps can do, it just goes on for so long (if you're not 1-2 turning it with a flier, anyway...), and thanks to the wind and all the flying units it can sometimes be tricky to tell what's going to happen between turns. The map has some nasty reinforcements too, with a whole load of enemies spawning right when you approach the boss. You can take him out and seize the point to end it quickly before they kill you, but Fuga himself, even if he's not very threating in combat, is annoyingly hard to hit. You can also stand on the stairs to make sure the reinforcements don't spawn, but if you don't know they're coming then that's only going to help you on a second attempt.

Tbh I think in a game with either map saves or divine pulse this would be one of my favourite maps. It's difficult, has an interesting gimmick, and can be approached in many different ways... It's just frustrating when attempts take up to an hour and can end to a single positioning mistake or not memorising the wind pattern 2 turns in advance!

    (the revelation version sucks tho)
