    Gameplay and Story Integration: Ashe and Cyril

    After watching the Cyril-Ashe supports, I started thinking more about what Ashe calling himself and Cyril not so different was about, and I realized just how much that statement rings true. As playable units, they have the same weapon strengths (Lance/Axe/Bow), train the same weapons (axe/bow), have similar growths, and they slot into the same classes pretty easily. If you were to ignore the big elephants in the room (Vengeance + Point Blank Volley, Flying strength, riding strength), they would be pretty identical.

    Both of these fine lads are also from poor backgrounds. Both of them lost their parents at a very young age, and both were taken in by a much older figure with some radical ideas and a lack of reasoning skills, and similar to their performance as units, there are some elephants in the room.

    Ashe was never alone. Ashe was protecting his brother and sister, and when he was taken in, his brother and sister came along. Lonato raised them like his own children. Lonato was an active part of Ashe's childhood, giving him advice and telling him to slow down when he was trying to prove himself too hard, and over the course of the six years between him getting adopted and him joining the academy, he had not only a father, but his brother and sister too. On top of all of that, Lonato taught Ashe to read.

    Cyril had none of that, and he was afraid to ask for more because, as he told Ashe, he believed the jobs that he did were the only thing that kept him there, and he wanted to seem capable to the point that he was too scared to ask to learn how to read. Half of his supports start with people trying to use him or assert themselves over him. Compared to Ashe, Cyril seems destined to be the one dealing with others' wacky adventures more often than not.

    Despite this, Ashe really is the most similar to Cyril. While it's true that Cyril is a foil for Claude as well, Claude and Cyril have less in common. Ashe is the one that Cyril calls friend, and he's also the one to have an ending with Cyril. Their supports are also one of the few in which Cyril seems to be an equal with the other person he's interacting with. It's an all around good friendship between two people that have far more in common than they have differences.
