I’ve been kind of obsessed with the idea of a switch port of Awakening lately

    Posted: 15 Oct 2021 11:30 AM PDT

In all honesty, I'd much rather have a remake of an older game that's either never been released in the west, or a game that's incredibly difficult to find and play legally. But I can't stop thinking about some theoretical 'Awakening Definite Edition' featuring all the content from the original, plus some online modes to replace Streetpass (and maybe even some side multiplayer mode like Fates, I dunno). I just needed somewhere to write about this concept, I really dont think anything like this idea would ever happen. But it's a cool idea, maybe?

Spooky Emblem: What is a Spooky Story That You Would Tell Alois to Scare Him?

Alois is terrified of spooky stories! What are some stories from the Fire Emblem series that you could tell Alois to scare? What are some modern real life events that would scare him?

The Three Houses Master Classes were bad design, and I hope the series moves away from them.

    Posted: 15 Oct 2021 03:40 PM PDT

I really love three houses class system; it was a refreshing take on FE gameplay, but I think it could use a lot of improvements. It does kill some of unique identity of differing characters, especially when you factor in mastery abilities, where units pretty much all become hit +20 and death blow/darting blow blobs. Specifically, the master classes have a really confusing design space. Some are hybrid classes that combine two archetypes but do neither as well (Holy Knight, Mortal Savant) while others are direct promotions (Falcon Knight, Wyvern Lord) and some are even BOTH (Warmaster, Gremory). The result is that a lot of the late game classes feel very pointless and haphazardly designed in three houses. And of course, while fliers always have and will be strong in FE games, theee houses is worse because you can simply ball up the best abilities from other classes and just throw it onto whatever hyper mobile chassis you want .

A better system would have been to 1) lock characters into entire class class progressions along a branching tree, and 2) remove master classes as a tier and include them among the advanced classes. And 3) create more design space for single-weapon classes to excel, while having multiple weapon classes be more flexible generalists (weapon triangle would help here)

    For example,

Soldier would be able to promote into either Pegasus Knight, Armored Knight, or Cavalier. Cavalier would upgrade into Paladin, Bow Knight, Holy Knight, or Dark Knight, while Pegasus Knight would upgrade into Falcon Knight (or an additional option). Armored Knight would upgrade into either Great Knight or Fortress Knight.

Additionally, hybrid type classes would promote from multiple trees. So Warmaster would be available from the brigand or brawler tree, while Hero would be available from Mercenary or Brigand.

Clearly, Wyvern Rider would be an intermediate class, and Wyvern Lord and Malig Knights would be advanced.

Balance-wise, there would have to be a lot of changes.

I'd like to see the weapon triangle return, and for there to be more tradeoffs and customization. Single weapon type locked classes, like the Swordsmaster or Warrior, would have powerful abilities that push them ahead Hero or Warmaster in pure combat, but Hero and Warmaster would have the benefit of more versatility, and perhaps more defensive/utility options.

For example, Archer could promote to sniper for Hunter's Volley absurd kill potential, or Ranger, and gain access to swords, and perhaps better movement and terrain abilities.

The traditional weapon and magic triangles would return, and bows would again be neutral but strong against fliers. Gauntlets would fit in by being weak to all other melee weapons (lack of reach) but exceptionally strong against mages and archers.

While I'd like to retain advanced classes having some unique ability or weapon art, I'd like to see random abilities return more to the individual units.

Basically, this would be a kind of hybrid of three houses and older games. Any unit can still train to any class, but the choices are locked in, which in turn would actually probably make unit build strategies more diverse. Thanks for coming to me Ted Talk
