Revisiting Gaiden, what it does better than Shadows of Valentia Posted: 22 Aug 2020 11:35 AM PDT I would like to preface this thread by saying that I've played SoV only once, and Gaiden twice. I am not trying to say that Gaiden is better than SoV, but rather that some specific aspects of it are done better, and that they're interesting to talk about. The point I'm trying to make is that they're both worth playing, and even if you don't want to, hey, it's nice trivia right? As I was playing, there were a couple of things that I noticed, some story based, some gameplay based, so let's start with the story based ones. These are, obviously, subjective. The first point I'd like to bring attention to is Alm and Celica's confrontation at the end of act 2. In the original Gaiden, Alm is a lot more direct, a lot more confrontational. I understand part of this is due to the translation patch, perhaps it's even due to the limitations of the console. It's harder to write flowery language when you're limited in memory. But it leads to Celica's anger towards Alm feeling more justified, because yeah, he is being a bit more unreasonable. Compare this excerpt from Gaiden
To this one from SoV
Alm gets angry, and she gets angry in return, and that's fine, but the way it's framed, she's the one that escalates it into an argument, and it feels as though Alm is being yelled at for no good reason since he's being pretty reasonable up to that point. By contrast, it makes Celica look unreasonable. In the original conversation in Gaiden, short as it was, Alm was definitely a lot more unreasonable before the argument started, making it more even. The second story beat I'd like to talk about is Celica coming with Jedah in Duma Tower. There's a few elements to this one. The first one is that if you do Celica's act first, then Celica merely goes with Jedah based on the whole Mila thing. And while I think this motivation is strong enough as it is, it is missing one of the aspects of her motivation that was present in Gaiden, and is present in Echoes but only if you do Alm side first. See, if you did Celica's side first in Gaiden, what would happen is that Celica wouldn't actually make her decision right away. You would be kicked back to the world map and have to play Alm's side. Only when Alm gets attacked by the necrodragons, does Celica finally make the decision to follow Jedah. And furthermore, when it cuts back to Celica and you're told that Jedah can save Alm, Celica doesn't go on her own. You, as the player, have to make the decision to walk forward and be sacrificed. It's the only decision you can make, but much like MGS3 Spoilers for an analogy killing the boss by having to pull the trigger yourself it's a lot more powerful than when you just... Have the player character do it. This moment is especially great because you get to see the final map, and Celica's starting position in the final map. Next up are going to be assorted minor gameplay stuff. Forging in SoV made it so that forged weaponry is often the only option for units that can use them. Getting Lukas to double with the speed ring is less relevant than giving him a strong weapon to use, because it'll increase his damage output more. However, between rings being generally stronger in Gaiden than in SoV, and weapons being weaker because of no forging, speed ring Lukas is a thing, and it's hilarious. 9 move 40 speed armor knight is a trip that I want everyone to experience once in their life. The prayer ring and angel ring also come to mind, with the former granting wrath, and the latter doubling your level up gains. This is especially hilarious when given to one of the few units with good growths in Gaiden, like Est or Alm once he's freshly promoted, or just any unit that is going to see a lot of combat that map. The Dark Sword in SoV is kinda worthless, but in Gaiden it was pretty neat since dread fighters were immune to the recoil, giving it a bit of a niche. The Dark Sword is a gotoh, if you will. Sure, you can forge it into a hero sword in SoV, but you probably don't need yet another good sword for your dread fighters. Expel felt utterly useless in SoV, whereas it's a major tool in Gaiden. Not only are there less maps where cantors are threatening (like act 5 alm side), but the success rate of the spell was severely nerfed, and on top of that it now has a restricted range, making it feel like it's better to just fight through the cantor's summons. I understand that it was stupidly busted, but it feels like it went from busted to pointless. Alm with a bow got 1-5 range, which is absolutely hilarious to abuse in act 4. Killer bow alm? Nah man, that's weak. Blessed bow Alm. Lastly, I'd like to talk about act 5. The first main difference is that the act 5 maps are actually unique in Gaiden, while SoV only has Alm's trials + berkut and the final map. Gaiden had a map where the floor lost one row to swamp every turn, one where a baron went for a switch that would create swamp while necrodragons were summoned, it was neat to play these maps while SoV just gave me generic dungeon maps with mostly generic enemy encounters based on the enemies faced inside the dungeon. This is also true of Duma tower, but the maps there were less neat so whatever. Alm's trials in SoV, at least in hard mode, felt a little overtuned. I didn't realize that my Alm would need a fuckton of defence to survive the deathgoyles, and so, he didn't have a fuckton of defence. He was getting 3 rounded with around 55 hit vs him while he was on a supply tile with 40 avoid. The only way I had to beat the maps were to cheese them, equipping a shield for defence and chugging from the convoy while slowly wittling down enemies (due to having less attack, due to losing the killer bow). In Gaiden, the trials feel like a victory lap to me. Alm solos, but he's come so far that he doesn't even break a sweat. The enemies are stronger versions of terrors that you've never seen elsewhere in the game, like wights, deathgoyles, and white dragons, but that's okay, Alm is so strong that even these uniquely strong monsters don't pose a threat. It's a great feeling. And lastly, there is one story element to act 5 that is sorely lacking in SoV - Celica's party getting hurt. The implication in Gaiden was that while Alm is looking for Falchion and fighting his way to Celica, Celica and the gang are fighting. They're dying. There's a masive sense of urgency because if you don't hurry, they're gonna die. Every now and then, you get a message that say, Celica, lost a bit of hp, and that carries over into the battle when you enter the fight. There's still plenty of time for Alm to get there in reality, but the player feels rushed, and that's great. tl;dr of the thread? Just play Gaiden, bro. It's not better than SoV, but it's not awful either. It's different. Both games are fun. If you like SoV, please at least try Gaiden to see where it came from, because it's a nice little experience. Shadows of Valentia Discussion Series - Clair: Highborn Flier Posted: 22 Aug 2020 05:05 PM PDT Today, we are discussing Clair. Clair is a playable character in Shadows of Valentia and is the younger sister of Clive. She is a pegasus knight of Zofia. Despite resistance, Clair joined the Deliverance, she was accepted as a knight after she asked her father permission to fight alongside her brother. However, she was captured by Desaix's men and was held captive until Alm and Lukas rescued her. Clair rejoined the Deliverance and fought alongside her brother and the group to overthrow Desaix. In Gaiden, Clair is shown to have a crush on Alm, which she never gets over, even when she is won over by Gray. In Shadows of Valentia, Clair and Alm's relationship is expanded and generally portrayed as platonic on Alm's end. She backs off once she witnesses how close Alm and Celica are. The two become very close friends as the game progresses. Throughout the game, Clair is courted by both Gray and Tobin, causing some rifts between the two friends. Ultimately, Clair chooses to wed Gray after the events of the war. Clair is supported by: [link] [comments] | ||
