    Have You Noticed How Avatar Customization Has Been In Decline?

    • New Mystery of the Emblem: In addition to choosing Kris' gender, appearance, and Class, the player is also asked to determine their socio-economic background, best quality, and ideal career. Additional customization options also become available mid-game at specific points.
    • Awakening: Robin has a set background. They also start out in a unique Class, but they're never given a personal weapon so nothing is missed if you switch to a different one.
    • Fates: Corrin is limited to one alternative Class. It's chosen by the player, but Corrin is also granted a personal sword before you're even asked which campaign to play, and it evolves over the course of the story, so if you keep Corrin in a Class that can't use swords the game gets vaguely passive-aggressive about it.
    • Three Houses: Appearance customization is completely gone (barring some DLC outfits and accessories,) and they made the Final Fantasy X mistake of letting you type in your name in a fully voiced game. You might as well set your name as "Professor," because that's all anyone will ever call you, even when cursing your existence and swearing bloody vengeance on you for the death of their relatives.
      • To make matters worse, Byleth has the least freedom of any controllable unit in the game. In addition to not letting you set their Strengths and Weakness and giving them a personal sword, trying to get Byleth into a magical, mounted or armored Class requires spending those precious early game Activity Points on Faculty Training or Sundays on Seminars, and this is even assuming the relevant professors are even present.

    (And before anyone brings it up, Mark is not a factor in this conversation, they were just a form you filled out for when the cast broke the fourth wall.)
