    Let's talk about Catherine

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 04:26 PM PST

Maybe I'm preaching the choir here but I don't think it cannot be overstated just how good Catherine as a unit is and imo she is one of the key factors why BL and GD are easier to complete on Maddening mode compared to either BE route. I will attempt to showcase her strengths and weaknesses on Maddening mode though allow me to warn you:

***literal great wall of text incoming, tl;dr at the end***

    Recruitment & Availability:

Catherine's recruitment conditions are to reach Level 15 with Byleth but like all other recruitable units this requirement can be lowered with higher Support ranks to the following:

    • C = Level 12
    • C+ = Level 9
    • B = Level 6

Right off the bat we get one of the easiest conditions for a recruitment. No specific ranks in a specific class skill, just train your Byleth. Plain and simple. Level 6 is more than achieveable by Ch.5 and even Level 9 isn't much of a stretch if you cannot attain the B-Support in time. Keep in mind that her B-Support is time-locked and cannot be accessed before Ch.5 is completed. While technically available from Ch.4 onwards due to aforementioned restriction it's safe to say that recruiting her that early is quite unlikely.

Catherine will be missing for Ch.7 and Ch.10. During the latter neither will she be available for Monastery activities nor will she receive any skill exp during that month. This is quite annoying and magnifies an issue she has as a unit.

    Stats:

Let's talk about the greatest selling point of Catherine. Base stats. Yes, base stats in 3H. I know, sounds ridicilous, right? Then feast your eyes on this: (Stats shown if recruited in Chapter 5)

Level HP STR MAG DEX SPD LUK DEF RES Cha
    9 35 19 8 13 18 10 13 8 8

I don't think I have to elaborate much, the numbers speak for themselves. No one in your roster will realistically will have reached her bases (not even Byleth). 18 Spd is enough to double everything, even on Maddening mode, and she can take way more hits than any other unit you will have so far.
Note that her personal skill adds 5 damage reduction if she is without a battalion meaning she can have 18 Def and 13 Res, giving her better durability than Dedue with his personal skill active.

But wait, there is more. She starts as a Swordmaster so she will always have +5 damage with Swords thanks to Swordfaire. Oh, did I mention she brings you the Thunderbrand? You know, a Relic Brave Sword that can be wielded by just about ... anyone? That was anticlimatic. Anyway, she just happens to be the best wielder for it with her Sword Prowess Lv.5 and a total bonus of 20 damage due to her Swordfaire, assuming every strike hits. That's a lot of damage. Especially if she crits with her respectable crit rate with the weapon.

Well, you might wonder if her growths are bad then. Like most prepromoted units in Fire Emblem. That's a thing, right? (Note: These are her base growths, add class growths for the total growth rate)

HP STR MAG DEX SPD LUK DEF RES CHA
    50% 50% 25% 40% 55% 30% 30% 20% 25%

... not really. Not only does Catherine sport some of the best bases in the game she also has good growths to pair them and they are very comparable to students like Felix. Similarly to FE4 units in promoted classes do not suffer from an EXP penalty which means she will grow at the same rate as any other unit. Crazy.

    Class & Skill levels:

Now we get to the one major flaw Catherine has. Her class selection.
Being a Swordmaster has its merits early on but on the other hand it's not something you want to be stuck in permanently. It's a class with only 5 move and even with Stride that's pretty rubbish.
A class with more mobility would profit her greatly so she then can take her great combat capability everywhere you want. Well abou that:

    • S: Swords
    • S: Brawling
    • W: Reason

Disgusting. Neither Sword or Brawling are required for some of the better classes in the game. In fact they are the most irrelevant class skills in the game, period. Without having strengths in Lance, Axe, Bow, Authority or Flying it requires very dedicated investment in form of lessons for her to raise those ranks, so she can reclass into something better.

At least she doesn't have a crippling weakness either and she has the single-most greatest asset, a unit can have in 3H. She is ... female. \cues music** Ehem.
In all seriousness Catherine having the option to reclass to a Pegasus Knight covers her glaring flaw pretty well. It's a class with lenient requirements and gives her the mobility she lacks while giving her increased skill exp for two good class skills (Lance & Flying). Having wings is just that good and Catherine being able to get them early will make her even better.
Of course she loses some stats as she demotes to an Intermediate class. Her Atk takes the biggest hit, being reduced by a total of 7 points (-2 Str and no Swordfaire) and loses singular points in most stats. Even with that in mind she will be more than capable of eliminating most enemies with regular weaponry and her performance with Thunderbrand is still enough to slay most bosses in Part 1. It's

Once she reaches Level 20 Catherine will be stuck in an odd spot. Becoming a Wyvern Rider demand a B rank in Axes which is a steep requirement for someone like her who has to raise it all the way from E with a neutral affinity. She will have the Flying rank for it (assuming you reclassed to a Pegasus Knight) but there is hardly time to focus on her non-existent Axe rank unless you decide to downgrade her even further to a Brigand. There is also the opportunity cost to raise her Authority instead, assuming you want her to carry some of the better flying battalions.

That being said I don't think this affects her that badly. The gap between her and the students will be lessened by the advantages offered by the Wyvern Rider class but she was way ahead of them to begin with. It's not unlikely that she still remains ahead of potential Wyverns like Petra or Ingrid. At worst she will be comparable to your other units and there is no reason to say no to a still respectable flying unit.

It's possible to use Catherine as a Swordmaster or, with a bit more investment, as an Assassin during this period. But in my eyes this isn't a lucrative move as she loses her ability to fly only for better stats. Especially Part 2 onwards the ability to fly can make many maps easier and enable to clear them faster.

Catherine will experience a second wind once Master classes become a topic of interest. The promotion into a Falcon Knight is trivial for her as she long honed her Lance and Flying skills while she always had the A rank in Swords. Now profiting from 8 Mov and better class bonuses Catherine can once more become a force of nature that can tear apart her enemies.

    Silver Snow Route

Unfortunately the Silver Snow route takes away all of Catherine's strengths and she needs to be treated as a completely different unit. She will join you much later at Ch.12 and due to the way base stats correlate with recruitment her stats are now only comparable to your trained units. That's a major downgrade compared to the other routes she is available in. Even worse her skill ranks remain largely the same which in combination with her late join time makes her class selection completely unsalvageable. This means you only get a foot-locked unit wih average stats, giving you little reason to field her over your other units. Very disappointing.

    Conclusion:

You might have guessed it if you reached the end of this wall but Catherine is amazing. You get a unit that sports strong bases early on who can go toe-to-toe with Maddening enemies and their inflated stats. Put a bit of effort into her and you get a flying unit that can last all the way through the game. I can't recommend her enough on BL and GD runs, even going so far to priotize her over any student you might have in mind (except Lysithea I guess). Though anyone who plays a BE route will have to do without her as she is either not available (CF) or a below-average unit (SS).
