    The Effects of Three Houses

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:39 AM PDT

I'm sorry but this is going to be a really, really long post. I really just wanted to find a place to finally talk about this and I'm hoping here is good. I will try to leave out any key details about plot or what really happens, or just be really vague. So spoiler warning?

Okay, I gotta start by mentioning how much I adore this game! This was my first Fire Emblem game I've every played, and I am trying to get my hands on more. That being said, I wanted to talk about how this game affected me in a personal and emotional way.

I was really hesitant to get the game in the first place, I was always scared of the story and even more worried that I would have to play previous titles to understand the game. But regardless, I decided to just jump head first into it. That was about 2 months ago now, and I've sunk about 125 hours into the game, as well as the 25 dollars for the DLC. I've done Azure Moon, Crimson Flower, and Verdant Wind (in that order) so far. I couldn't put it down (kinda).

So right off that bat, I chose Blue Lion for my first run. I adored the story of a broken prince becoming a legendary king. Watching Dimitri's journey and his development literally brought me to tears constantly. I loved all the characters and their interactions were amazing. I didn't understand recruiting and barely understood any side stuff for the monastery. It was me trying to understand the mechanics and the complexities. But I overall loved it and couldn't wait to play a different house. (Also I picked Ingrid in the end and I will fight you if you think she ain't the best).

Onto Black Eagles, I was excited because I heard how much everyone loves Edelgard. I played through pretty normally and I finally learned to recruit, so I brought in Ashe (my fav archer) and Marianne (because of course). Then I got to the decision to go with Edelgard, of course I chose yes, and made sure to save as well to play again later with the "Stay" option. Then when asked again, I chose to protect her. Immediately, freaking Rhea goes ham and all I could think was "crap, I knew something wasn't right about her". I continued and went through as normal, until... the monastery. When Seteth and Flayn showed up I was like "please don't make me have to kill them". Which obviously... yeah.

That was definitely the first hit to me. I immediately realized what this path had planned for me. Instead of explaining each and every single death, I'll summarize it like this. All the characters in my previous run, all my favorites that I knew and loved, had to die. It SUCKED. Skipping forward, Rhea turns out to actually not be as good (which I totally knew would happen, I never trusted her). We kill her, end of story. I chose Edelgard, obviously, for this run. Let me tell you, I have never been so disappointed in a game in all my life. I had killed all my old friends and students, just to be told "yeah I'll take the ring, thanks buddy". Ouch. I hoped maybe the epilogue would give me some resolve, but no, it was worse. I adored Edelgard and her extremely interesting backstory and motivations (which I later really believed was the right thing). All the support convos and the fact so many rank her as the best romance option, lead me to believe I was in for a treat. What I got left me really unsatisfied and even a little heartbroken. I actually had to put the game away for about a week just to mentally recover. I even deleted that extra save file for what I know if the Black Eagle church route, becaus I'm not sure I can go through it again.

I finally got back into it and started the Golden Deer path. I don't have so much to say about it. It was good overall with some really great students. A part that bugged me was that I had to follow Rhea again (since I really stopped trusting her at this point). Not to mention Dimitri's rather inglorious exit, and the killing of more students I loved (luckily not as many because I recruited A LOT of them this time). However the one that really got me this time around was how Edelgard was handled. I really, really sympathize with her ideals and her vision. In Verdant Wind, it really seemed to me that Claude and her and some of the same ideas. So when we stormed her palace I was really hoping for Byleth to reach out his hand or something, ANYTHING. But what I got just really hammered away at me. I believed, and still believe that it did not have to happen. I'm honestly still mad about it. But either way, I continued met the REAL villain and beat it. I chose Marianne for anyone who might care. Lord help me I love her so much, definitely 10/10 worth it.

So that leaves where I am now. I started the Ashen Wolves, but am struggling to get into it because I honestly don't like the new students that much (especially their designs, sorry). But am hoping for some encouragement to really get to it.

Overall, I think Three Houses may be one of my favorite games of all time (like top 5 for sure). I loved the battles, the students, and the maps (I played in zoomed mode more often and damn... the level of detail is amazing). The monastery was cool to explore at first, but later became kinda boring, especially when new conversations and events only happen once every month. The cutscenes could be kinda hard to watch sometimes, but listening to it was no problem, since the voice acting is incredible. I wish there were more animated scenes, but I get it must have taken a long time for the ones we got. I also didn't like the way Verdant Wind was handled, I wish it was a little more neutral and had all the houses join together to stop the true evil, still liked it enough as it is.

TL;DR: Amazing game, that had moments that broke my heart. Great story. Marianne is best girl (come at me).

Let me know what you guys think. Am I just a wuss for how I handled it? How were your play throughs? I'm really interested in talking about it. Thanks for reading! :)
