"What If?" Wednesday, Chapter 21: The More, the Barrier!

    Chapter 20

Welcome, all ye fans of the Fire Emblem series, and the games therein! Happy Saint Nicholas Day, to those who celebrate(d) it! I may have forgotten a gift for you then, but I have one now - it's another "What If?" Wednesday speculative gameplay discussion thread! So fluff your pillows, shake out your shoes, and let's get into it!

Staves - and their occasional analogue, White Magic - are a longstanding feature of the Fire Emblem series, granting their wielders special powers. Unlike weapons and tomes, they are not able to cause direct harm to foes - but they can turn the tide of battle in other ways. Recovery staves, like Heal and Physic, come to mind immediately - and those who played the late-Kaga and GBA games may recall intense frustration at enemies with the Sleep and Berserk staves. But there's another staff, easily overlooked by new players, that appears in almost every title - the Barrier staff, called "Ward" in certain games. This boosts the target unit's resistance (Magic, in Thracia 776, because that stat is pulling double-duty) by a certain value (usually 7), which diminishes by 1 per turn. Like Pure Water, this can be an effective tool to take on magical enemies - but on maps with few mages, its utility is limited.

But what if this weren't the case? What if the Barrier staff, instead of just boosting Resistance, were able to provide a comparable boost to any stat of the player's choice? You can choose a different stat to boost with each use (assume it's an independent menu, like when using Hammerne or Aum). In such a scenario, how would you use the Barrier staff? Which units would particularly benefit from such a change? Would you like to see such a change to the Barrier, or rather, to see different Staves that cast temporary stat boosts (i.e. New Mystery's Speed Staff)? Or are such tools redundant, in the age of Rallies? Feel free to consider the impact on any game in which the Barrier, Ward, or Magic Up staves make an appearance.

Anyway, thanks for reading! My own answer is coming soon, but I want to hear what you all think. Let me know, and have a lovely evening.
