Everyone Plays Fire Emblem - Week of January 22st, 2021

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 04:23 PM PST

Welcome to the next installment of EPFE that I totally didn't put up late... again! This is a casual space for discussing any ongoing Fire Emblem (or related games) playthroughs. Screenshots, impressions, frustrations... gameplay stuff that would otherwise be removed as a standalone post under Rule 8 can be shared here.

While you can of course ask for advice here, specific questions might get better responses in the General Question Thread here.

As always, remember to tag your spoilers, and have fun!

Last week's thread can be found here.

Was Fire Emblem: Awakening good? What about Birthright?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 04:46 PM PST

Recently I finished two full playthroughs of Three Houses and a play through of Path of Radiance, and it made me hungry for more FE. I got both Awakening and Birthright when they came out but never finished either due to both of them being too difficult (I was young!). I know those two aren't super highly regarded in the FE fan base, especially Birthright, but they're the only other games I own in the series. Should I play them or hunt down copies of the older games?

What does it for them to be good? Manaketes, Laguz, Taguel, Wolfskin and Kitsune

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 04:10 AM PST

Hello and welcome back to What does it take for them to be good? Today, we'll be visiting a furry convention to see how good is a more experimental FE class. Transformation classes are treated widly differently from game to game, so this serves to tell us which game handeled them the best. Now, Fire Emblem games are usually easy enough to allow you to use anyone you like, but when discussing what the best classes are we need to look at who makes the game the easyest and why that is. So in this post I'll be analyzing the manakete, laguz, wolfskin and kitsune classes to see why they work or don't work in certain FE games and what can be done to improve them in the future. This analysis assumes the hardest difficulties, no grinding and fast play.

Analyzing their viability through the games

    FE2, FE4, FE5, FE7, Echoes and 3H

    • These games don't have any of these classes

    FE1

    • So our first representative is Bantu. You need to get his firestone from another village in a compeltely different chapter. He sadly never gets his firestone on LTCs, but on slower playthrough he doesn't need to worry and he gains very nice bulk from it as well, while having 6 movement unlike someone lik Draug. The firestone also has infinite uses and 16 might, which is even stronger than every silver weapon (though due to his 2 strength he will be doing less damage than most) in the game along with only having 3 weight. However, he won't double non 0AS enemies without a speedwing and he won't be one rounding the majority of enemies. He can be used to set up kills nicely though, his mobility issues become a problem lategame and his poor growths hold him back a lot. Tiki on the other hand isn't nearely as good. She has nice effective damage against manaketes and that's it. She join pretty late when there are only 2 maps with manaketes on them, she does no damage to Generals, Ballisicians, and Dracoknights at base, she also needs +12 strength and +3 speed from base to kill Medeus, which is 3 energy rings and a speedring from base and her nice growth rates don't help her that much. She is also stuck with 6 move. She does have nice defenses, but those only last so long.

    FE3

    • This time transformation works a little differently. You 1 durability of the dragon or divine stone to transform into a dragon for 5 turns. The main problem is that Bantu and Tiki are stuck at 5 move. This is the same movement as armor knoghts, which is pretty obviously terrible. Bantu does have some uses in book 2 as he can deal a lot of damage to ice dragons and he can use the star shards to boost his poor growths, while Tiki can be useful for the last few maps as they feature a lot of enemy dragons, but without using warp, Tiki and Bantu will be left in the dust by even your dismounted units.

    FE6

    • So, Fae isn't that great combat wise and she cannot OHKO enemy dragons on hard mode without extra investment or chip damage from other characters, while also having an only 30 use weapon at her disposal that can't be repaired. However, she has a nice nieche as you can put her at the bottom of your deployment order and use her to bait status staves from enemies, which is notable as status staves are a big annoyance in FE6 in a lot of maps. However, this can fail in a lot of the endgame chapters as enemies there have capped magic and a very real chance to hit Fae.

    FE8

    • Myrrh isn't that great. Myrrh is held back a lot by her poor mobility and lack of 2 range. While her dragonstone does have a nice 50 uses meaning that she will never run out and she deals effective damage to enemies like zombies. Still, enemies cannot keep up with your party very well in FE8 and her main nieche is doing effective damage to necrodragons, but you can use legendary weapons for them. Aside from that she is a good counter to enemy mages, but she isn't very good.

    FE9

    • This time we have laguz among us. Now, laguz units function by needing to have a filled up gage to transform and wreck enemies, but this depends on the unit. Someone like Lethe can transform instantly, while someone like Mordecai needs to wait. There are laguzstones that transform you instantly, but those are rare. Muraim also has an item which keeps you as a laguz permanently, but that item nerf your stats. The best laguz are Lethe due to her nice earlygame contributions, Mordecai due to smite being an awesome skill and Reyson because he's a dancer. Reyson is particularly notable as he can dance for 4 units when transformed. Unfortunately, Laguz units aren't good in the later chapters as you mounted units have likely snowballed due to BEXP and they also lack 1-2 range and forgable weapon. The last few royal laguz also likely fail to reach Ashnard before Ike has killed him.

    FE10

    • This is a very interesting game for them. We have some really good units like Volug, but also some absolutely awful units like Lyre (arguably the worst unit in FE). Their main problem here is lack of 1-2 range and transformation gague which makes the helpless for a large part of the map. They can use grass to extend said gague or halfshift, but those don't make up for their faults and laguz gems are rare. The best units are Volug due to his nice bases and how good he is in part 1 and useful in part 3 as the DB need a lot of good units, Janaff & Ulki due to their nice bases and flight, the henron as they are dancers and the royal laguz as they don't need to deal with gague. This is weird as things like upping the bite rank of laguz the more they fight so that they don't suffer compared to forged weapons the beroc unit posses, but they suffer a lot from not being able to transform on turn 1 and gague. Also, who playtested Lyre and thought she was fine?

    FE11

    • Bantu is a meme, but Tiki has a useful nieche. So, since enemies are pretty bulky in SD and you'll often need more than one unit to take down bosses, Tiki is useful as she can hit hard and accurately without needing a lot of investment, particularly if you're warpskipping. You can also kill her off with the Falchion to get Nagi and then rewive Tiki in the last chapter. So, Tiki and Nagi are gonna be you designated Medeus killers and as such are pretty valuable overall.

    FE12

    • Bantu is an even bigger meme now and Tiki isn't that great. Both suffer from mobility issues and their stones not giving them good boosts to keep up with lunatic enemies. Bantu also lost his effective damage against fire dragons and Tiki can't even get her other stones as there isn't any warp on lunatic. However, Nagi comes back one more time to save the day. She cannot OHKO enemy dragons on Lunatic, but with some chip damage from a forged longbow she can reach the necessary treshold and also tank the swordmaster with the forged levin sword. Besides that she can't deal effective damage to Medeus, so she isn't that useful in the last chapter.

    Awakening

    • We have multiple transformation classes this time. The notable one is Panne as she comes with nice bases that allow her to contribute even on lunatic. However, she won't be staying in Taguel classline for very long as she will be reclassing to wyvern rider for flight + juicy Awakening promotion bonuses. So, you don't wanna stare at Nowi's stupid desing. Well, you don't have to as she's trash. She comes with 3 base speed, she's awful. She does give some nice bulk upon pair up, but you also lose 2 speed when apired up with her. Tiki is OK, but joins near the end of the game.

    Fates

    • So, Corrin is technically a manakete, but Corrin won't be using the dragonstone for too long and will reclass into something like Master Ninja or Paladin instead, which are classes that can't use the dragonstone.
    • Keaton can luckely promote, but he sadly cannot make too great use of his beaskiller utility, but he can be a functional combat unit if he's promoted instantly. However, his main utility is his nice pair up bonuses when promoted, giving +4 strength/speed at base, making him a great backpack for someone like Camilla.
    • Kaden was rated pretty low in the early BR tier lists, but nowadays he's known to be pretty good. He can serve as a nice additional combat unit. Here's the rundown if you're interested.

    What makes them bad?

Usually it's their poor bases not baing made up by their transformation bonuses, poor mobility, lack of 1-2 range, no access to forged weapons or promotion bonuses as well as nieches that aren't that useful overall. Also Laguz get screwed over by their gagues.

What does it take for them to be good?

I think Fates adresses them the best by giving them promotions and making them good 1 range combat units. It would be nice if there were spesific enemies that are very hard to deal with and you need transformation units to deal with them. Gague is an interesting idea, but doesn't serve the laguz well most of the time so it should either be extended significantly or removed outright.

    Next time: Something completely different

Previously: Pirate - Berserker. Also, Brigands and Onies

    A Return to Sprite Art-Style?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2021 09:43 AM PST

I just started playing Octopath Traveler recently and I was floored by the graphical style and I recently also restarted Fire Emblem for GBA. These things got me thinking. I'd love to see a return to sprite style art from the GBA days. And seeing something like OT makes me think it's a real possibility. What are your thoughts? Do you like the more "realistic" style as of late or would a return to sprite portraits and sprites on an overhead map but a welcome return or at least for a remake of the GBA games.
