Corrin: An Exhaustive Analysis of Fire Emblem's Most Controversial Protagonist

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 08:11 AM PST

Hello everyone. A friend of mine wrote an extensive writeup on Corrin for Fates' 5th anniversary. Unfortunately, he wasn't aware this sub filters out accounts less than a day old from posting discussions, so he asked me to post it in his stead. There are spoilers for all three routes of Fates.

All credit goes to AtomicPickle, both his Twitter account and a link to the write up can be found here: https://twitter.com/At0micp1ckle/status/1362741213313585153

Direct link to the writeup: https://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1srjg2k

It's a very good read! Feel free to comment or share it around if you like.

Should the support affinity mechanic return in some fashion?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 05:10 PM PST

For those of you not in the know, support affinity was a somewhat arcane mechanic in the GBA and Tellius games (i.e. FE6 to FE10) wherein characters would have a particular elemental inclination that would determine the support bonuses they and their support partners would get. What made this arcane was that due to a combination of limited UI space and obscurantist game design you couldn't get an idea of what affinities provided which bonuses, so for instance in the Tellius games unless you consulted a guide realizing the Earth affinity was really good (since it provided a huge chunk of Avoid, and thus in RD an Earth-Earth support could provide up to +30 avoid in a 2RN game) you wouldn't get the most out of them. And that's before we get into the GBA affinities providing really janky support bonuses on top of the already tedious support grinding mechanics.

That being said, however, there's some merit to the approach; contrasting with Awakening/Fates style support bonuses, where support bonuses were the same regardless of pairing and were solely determined by support rank, or with SoV support bonuses, where said bonuses were determined solely by the supporting pair (the Alm-Faye support giving Faye negative Avoid is still a meme), or 3H support bonuses, which kinda split the difference and grant additional bonuses to characters with a storyline connection (and introduced the wrinkle of "linked attacks" to the equation).

If Support Affinities were to return in future FE games, the biggest change I'd recommend would be to make it clear what bonuses each affinity provides. Like, for instance Thunder affinities boosting Critical hit rate.

So, thoughts? Was this an interesting mechanic IS should revisit? Or was it a needless bit of experimentation that should stay in the past?
