I want to talk about Shura, Reina and Gunter

    Posted: 04 May 2021 07:18 PM PDT

my three favorite Fates characters. Yes, the three characters with the extremely limited support lists. I don't have some deep insight or anything, I just wanna show some love.

    Reina

Alright first off, I love this design. As a unit, I thought she was a pretty solid pre-promote and fun to use. Carried her weight for a good while. Although tbh i've only played birthright twice (i mostly just replay conquest). As a character she's sort of introduced as a battle-thirsty warrior, with a personal skill that's somewhat evocative of drinking the blood or her enemies. And if she was characterized that way in her supports, I would just write her off. Thankfully, it doesn't have a large presence in her supports, which instead focus on how she became a knight and her relationship with her parents. Her female corrin support specifically is the one that I like.

    Shura

This guy makes my heart ache on conquest, I really wish he came with his boss skills and inventory. It would make him more of an interesting unit and less of just a decent Niles replacement. The opportunity cost is a deployment slot and boots, I don't think grisly wound would've been to much to ask for. He's somewhat useful in his first deployment chapter, and he has a boss convo with Kotaro. That's what I like about Shura. He's got a tenuous connection to a part of the story, between Kohga and kidnapping Azura. They could have done more with it, but when you've got absolute total randos like Nyx and Keaton in the war effort, its something. He's the only one i've S-supported out of enjoyment of the character.

    Gunter

Generally I like to strap this guy onto a swordmaster or master ninja corrin for the back half of conquest. Quick appreciation for his heroes artwork, I love the box art look. I had him at 4*+10 with a brave axe+ and had fun using him. I don't actually like most of the voice acting in fates, but this guy's the exception. "War and I go way back" is one of my favorite lines. Now, his support with corrin is my favorite in the entire game. Just a genuinely sweet support that does a good job portraying their relationship and giving more insight to Corrin's childhood at the castle. I pretend the S-support isn't there.

Of the three characters, Reina is the only one that kinda has a 'gimmick', and even then it's a pretty understated part of her personality. To me, they all feel like a natural part of their world and they don't come across as trying too hard to appeal to the player.

I feel like some people would enjoy FE even more if they didn't reset as much

    Posted: 04 May 2021 04:49 AM PDT

I'm not saying that anyone is playing the game WRONG or anything, everyone can of course play Fire Emblem in whichever way the want, depending on what's most fun for them.

However, I think that some people don't realize how fun FE can be if you allow things to go wrong and don't reset. Things like permadeath and limited resources exist for a reason - and I think a playthrough will become much more memorable if you're not as strict about pulling everything off perfectly.

From my experience, letting units die when they are killed (Or even sacrificing them for the greater good if need be), missing out on rewards and allowing things to NOT go to plan can raise the stakes tremendously and lead to a much more engaging and memorable playthrough. You're gonna have to work with what you got, and if things go horribly wrong and your best unit dies, then you're just going to have to improvise and experiment a bit which can be very exciting and present you with challenges you might not be used to.

I think many people don't want to feel like they're "missing out" on something when they don't play perfectly; or perhaps that not getting certain rewards or not having certain tools at their disposal will make the game harder for them, thus urging them to play the chapter again just in case.

I'm not saying everyone should only do Iron Man runs (Especially not on their first playthrough or anything), but I do feel like FE is at its best when you're struggling at times, only have a limited amount of tools to work with and your units are mortal. Not playing chapters over and over again will also make runs go by smoother and faster.

That being said, not all FE games fit this kind of mentality that well - least of all Three Houses where permadeath as a concept seems more like an afterthought. This also doesn't take ranked runs into account which are a different beast entirely.

TL;DR: I feel like playthroughs can be more memorable and exciting when you allow yourself to take mistakes into account and attempt to press on (Instead of just resetting whenever something bad happens).

Who is your favourite FE villain?

    Posted: 04 May 2021 05:18 PM PDT

Barring 3H since I have yet to play that, I have played all localized FEs and have come down to 3:

    1. The Black Knight & Lehran - By far they have they're the most written (in terms of the sheer size of the plot, as its 2 games), and you're really left to figure out a lot of their motivations for most of the game. Even in the finale of RD you still have to fit in some pieces together to figure out why they did what they did; most particularly The Black Knight. The Black Knight's arc with Ike is one of the best of the series, and his enigmatic nature goes along with it especially when you don't even figure out his identity by the end of PoR. It nicely builds up to the sequel. One tidbit I made though was they seem to operate like reverse Ike/Soren: one masterminds the plans and the other carries it out; one is 100% loyal to the other due to their fear of judgment and being alone (specifically they say those same words too) from being Branded; and their character arcs seem to be foils of the other. It's also cool to see someone as badass as the Black Knight to have some sort of unwavering loyalty to a master, in a way imo
    2. Lyon - While BK/Lehran are best written in terms of plot magnitude, I think he is the best written FE villain in terms of characterization. Lyon can either be the epitome of a tragic villain (when you're under Eirika's perspective) or he can be straight up villain (under Ephraim's). It's a very interesting quirk FE did for a villain and you're left, as the player, to judge whether which perspective is the correct one. I thought neither was correct, since you're under the lens of Ephraim/Eirika and there's no objective 3rd route to view his lines, but this IMO is the best way to write an ambiguous villain - the agency of Lyon's will is taken from him in Eirika's path, or it seems that he has fully embraced it in Ephraim's. Not to mention, all the great lines they have with each other. Another game worthy of a remake with VAs.
    3. Nergal - I actually was never aware that he was Ninian and Nils' dad and was just a generic power hungry villain for the longest time, until I started scouring the wikis for FE7 content. But it's also cool for a villain to have information you can dig up post-game//NG+ that's crucial to understanding their character motivations (like with Lehran/Black Knight) and further adds to the complexity to Ninian's and Nils' characters as well.

An honourable mention is Idoun (Idunn? I forget the official localized name) but she is another great tragic villain. Unfortunately, I'm left with nothing in the 3ds era (plot/character writing fell off there imo) so I have nothing much to say about the villains there.

Welcome to Round 7: Marcia and Lethe

Each round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give clear explanations as to why. Feel free to comment on each other and discuss why you agree or disagree. Be polite, and remember, this is all in good fun. After the 24 hours, I will review all the answers and understand what the consensus reached has been, posting the result in the next round. If there is no clear majority, a tally will be made. If a tie ensues, well the round will be extended until a tiebreaker comment appears. At the very end, a hub finalized tier list will be created, providing full analyses for FE9 units as well as a good solid tier list for the community.

    Rules:

    • The game is played somewhat efficiently. No grinding, boss abuse, etc.
    • The game is played on the NA Hard version
    • Killing enemies quickly is good. Killing enemies slowly is bad. Anything that results into either of these directions, be it high offensive or defensive stats, movement, 1-2 range, availability, etc is fair game. Finishing chapters quickly is cool too.
    • Personality and other story-related things do not matter. Sorry, everyone's a robot.
    • All characters are recruited. Recruitment cost is thus a non-issue.
    • This is not an LTC playthrough, so there's no need to go that extreme. But it's not a completionist one either.
    • Supports are acknowledged as a part of the character's viability
    • Votes must have an explanation with them. I'm not asking for a paragraph but the bare minimum is a sentence or two describing why you're putting X unit into Y tier. If you do not put an explanation under your votes, your vote shall not be counted
    • When it comes to resources like BEXP, characters are tiered with how well they make use of possible resources, if they have other competition for said resources and how well they perform without them. Arguments as to why a certain units deserves investment are important.
    • Be respectful

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Tiers Being Used:

    Fantastic Performance: S

Insanely useful from the get go, always a dominant force from the moment they arrive and require little investment if any. Contributes in a significant enough manner that they always sticks out and have a substantial role. The game changes substantialy when these units are sidelined.

    Includes: Titania

    Great Performance: A

Extremely useful and always a good addition to a team. Doesn't require too much investment and if they do then it's enough to make them stand out compared to most units. Biggest things holding them back are that they either don't stand out as much as the S tiers or even with investment they aren't as dominant in their role as the S tiers.

    Includes: Oscar

    Good Performance: B

Is pretty useful and has some sections of the game where they stand out and help. Overall solid, isn't the most significant unit, but definitely contributes in a helpful way. Aren't the highest priority when it comes to deployment, but will definitely be one of your deployment options to fill out your team. Biggest things holding them back are good but not amazing stats, not the best class access, not the best weapon access and maybe not the best availability. Good, but has some significant flaws that hold them back from being great.

Includes: Ike, Boyd, Soren, Rhys, Ilyana, Mist

    AOK Performance: C

Perfectly average, they do work and can become pretty good with investment but do fine without investment. At the end of the day they are just serviceable, neither a detriment nor a priority when it comes to being used and are essentially filler.

    Iffy Performance: D

Can perform a niche role and do something, but generally aren't that useful. Don't really do much and if they do something unique then it's usually done much better by a bunch of other units. Severely outclassed by most other units and while they can do something, it's usually pretty bleh in execution.

    Includes: Gatrie

    Lame Performance: E

Straight up bad, no way around it. There are very few places where they are actually useful, and they are actively difficult units to use effectively. Can probably do something at base such as heal other units, rescue canto others or chip stuff with effective weapons but it's such a bare minimum contribution that calling them good would be a stretch. They can do something, that's the most you can say for them. Other then that they're bad.

    Includes: Shinon, Mia

    Meme Performance: F Rank

These units are just really bad, complete bottom of the barrel. So bad that even with an insane amount of investment they either end up still bad or at best incredibly mediocre and this is accounting for immense babying and all stat boosters going to them. E ranks can at least do something that counts as contribution. These units can't even have that as a claim to fame, they're so bad that they just do little if anything in a non casual/non meme context.

    Includes: Rolf

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next round will be Mordecai and Volke
