Posted: 21 Jul 2021 04:26 PM PDT Hi everyone, Im making a fire emblem type game using most of the mechanics from three houses with some mechanics of my own thrown in. I need to keep in my back pocket, ways to prevent players from turtling. so far i have the following:
are there any more ways, story wise or not that i can make the player active and making decisions? i want to keep the player on their toes, ill throw in a few maps where they can still relax and take their time but i do want them to sometimes be pressured. Any suggestions are appreciated! [link] [comments]
Regarding the Fates Tier List, Pairings, and Guard Stances - Perhaps Our Philosophy Was Wrong? Posted: 21 Jul 2021 06:58 AM PDT Recently I saw an interesting series of videos on Lunatic Conquest by Zoran (playlist here) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioee1FkX5-Q&list=PLFud0P_vaA35rsElNohWWPQ6JGXhYP6_t, and I found it quite enlightening to see attack stance being used so much, as well as fluid transitions between attack and guard stance, as well as switching around pair-up partners. I also later saw a post he had made on SerenesForest critiquing our original tier list/ranking philosophy from the time Fates came out, suggesting that our thinking was too strongly shaped by Awakening, even where Fates differences were important. (https://forums.serenesforest.net/index.php?/topic/61499-the-lunatic-club-fates/page/42/&tab=comments#comment-5374583) For example, we generally assumed that character would be in the same steady pair-up with their spouse-to-be much of the time, and thus they'd often be locked in guard stances, making it harder for them to build up supports with other characters. In contrast, I saw Zoran's more fluid approach using lots of dual strikes making wider ranges of support building much easier, and enabling lots of Friendship class access too. This also benefitted a lot of early-joiner units a lot in his runs, as they had friendship and/or partner classes that the later-joining prepromotes had to wait a lot longer to get. EDIT: The larger number of unpaired units also enabled Zoran to have a lot more movement flexibility, so far as I saw, as they could move separately if needed and still could pair up as appropriate. Of course, Guard Stance is still quite powerful, but all of this made me wonder if we had overvalued it from the mindset we had going from Awakening. I don't claim to have the answers, and Zoran's word isn't gospel either, obviously, but just seeing it made me question so much about what I had assumed about Fates gameplay, tiering, and pairing that I really felt motivated to open a discussion to reexamine what we thought - where we may have went wrong, and in contrast where we may still have been right all along. Also, u/Zoran501 so that he knows I'm talking about his ideas. [link] [comments]

Re: Fates, Peri as Camilla's retainer? Posted: 21 Jul 2021 11:09 AM PDT As someone who has never played Fates... why is Peri not Camilla's retainer instead of Xander? Considering that whole Beruka thing (I think she was an assassin and Camilla hired her when Beruka was gonna kill her?) I think Camilla would also be the kind of person who would see a murder-happy nut that doesn't ask questions in a fighting tournament and go, "Hey, she'd make for a great retainer." Peri would be up for it for sure, just like with Xander. And I feel like Camilla wouldn't give a shit about Peri's immature speech. If anything, I think she'd encourage it because of her smother mother tendencies and also seeing it as part of her charm. She'd appreciate the twisted idea of her as a person and still trust her. And Peri has mommy issues and would love the flattery and attention. Is Beruka a more interesting character than Peri, to where if we were to have either Beruka OR Peri, that keeping her over Peri would be a better choice? I'm aware that Peri's character is poorly executed, but like, is she unsalvageable in an AU like this one? I don't know; I'd just like some other opinions on this topic. [link] [comments]
I miss spells having narrative weight. Posted: 21 Jul 2021 05:41 PM PDT Does anyone else miss the time when spells were actual tomes you had to purchase or find, similar to weapons? I love 3H, but it just felt kind of cheap having all of the spells learned through ranks, and excluding dark magic, that anyone can use any kind of magic if they level up Faith or Reason. I just miss the time when spells somewhat *mattered*, like Asvel learning to use Grafcalibur from Sety (or Ced or w/e), Forseti being a legendary weapon passed down from Levin to Sety, and Julia being able to yield a spell handed down from a divine dragon. The game made it clear too just how *powerful* these spells were, for good reason; Grafcalibur and Forseti were crazy broken. Meanwhile, none of the spells in the more recent games feel as special. Some characters only get access to certain spells, but the game doesn't put any kind of narrative behind it. The closest you get is Thyrsus, which is cool and all, but not quite the same. It also doesn't help that the spells have generic icons, whereas in past games you could actually *see* the differences between them and it felt special somehow to get a tome you've never seen before. Idk maybe I'm just being an old whining about better times, going up hills both ways, etc, but I feel like magic took a step down from way back when. Especially when you think someone like Sety, who could essentially wipe out an entire map on his own with Forseti. [link] [comments]
