    Opinion: The Rhea at the end of Crimson Flower is NOT her "true self"

    At the end of Crimson Flower, as the Immaculate One is rampaging and essentially hellbent on seeing the entire world burn, Edelgard seems to confidently claim that this is the "true self" of the dragon in Rhea being dragged into the light. But I disagree with this.

    Rhea at this point has been stung with a sequence of betrayals and personal losses. Byleth turned her mother's bones against her, just as Nemesis had, after being entrusted with such a precious thing. Not to mention, Edeglard herself was someone Rhea cared for, same as any of Garreg Mach's students. Worse still is her reaction after Seteth and Flayn are killed, which is VERY different from her reaction if they're forced to go into hiding.

    Even Catherine, loyal to the end, was starting to doubt Rhea by this time. Few people knew Rhea better than Catherine. Thus, I can only infer that this Rhea which had taken a slow descent into insanity is not, in fact, the "true" Rhea.

    The true Rhea, I feel, is the one that thoughtlessly threw herself in front of an Agarthan javelin to protect the people behind her. Imperfect and prone to paranoia, yes... but by no means intent on destroying the world or using people as literal puppets.

    What do you think? How "true" is the Rhea we see at the end of Crimson Flower?

    Based on some feedback I got in the general question thread, I've decided to publish my findings on the Japanese version of FE7, which among other things has effective weapon multiplier set to 3x rather than 2x. I came to the conclusion that the game is very obviously balanced around this and that the localized versions of FE7 don't adequately seek to address this change in other ways.

    I'd like to give a shoutout to /u/TheWildBlueOne who was way ahead of me in trying to bring this to players' attention with a couple threads from a few years back: 1 2. I purposely did not delve into these posts until I was done writing my own so as not to unintentionally plagiarize. I can confirm now that they came to many of the same conclusions I did (which are also worth reading), though I'm still going to share my own article, which I made an effort to (1) curate succinctly and procedurally with images interspersed and (2) include links to resources that will help players try it out for themselves, short of actually handing them the ROM.
