The Inconsistency of Archers Throughout the Series

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 03:23 PM PDT

So I am a person whose favorite fantasy weapon/character trope is "The Archer" sort of character. I think bows are super cool and in games like The Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, etc I always make my character an archer and this is also true for games where you have control over a player character like Awakening, Fates, and Three Houses.

One thing I've noticed from the few Fire Emblem games I've played (Echoes, Awakening, all of Fates, Three Houses, and Sacred Stones to be specific*) and all the ones I've seen is that archers are either seemingly very good or very bad across the board in every game.

In Awakening for example the main archer of the game, Virion, is like...REALLY bad. Even on Normal/Casual (the way I like to play) Virion was never really good for anything except shooting down winged units and picking off the scraps. Noire wasn't much of an improvement, either. Bows were also bad in FE1 and 3 and a bunch of other games.

On the flipside you have games like Gaiden/Echoes and Three Houses where bow units are insanely good at one of the best picks for the entire game. Shamir, Petra, and my Bow-leth have been carrying me through my current Silver Snow run and the only unit that comes close to their outputs are my Wyvern Lords Ferdinand and Seteth.

I just thought it was interesting how inconsistent bows can be across each game in the series since they're my favorite sort of trope/unit in fantasy.

Okay so, the children in Fates…

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 04:46 AM PDT

Is there a reason why some of the kids literally have designs that were copied and pasted from Awakening? I read a theory saying it may be that they are distant relatives of the Awakening kids. But I'm sure that's not the case. It bothers me…it feels so lazy.

What's the worst plot element from any Fire Emblem game?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 01:32 PM PDT

The Fire Emblem 20th Anniversary Book does not really clear up the situation about Nanna's father.

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 12:56 PM PDT

The Fire Emblem 20th Anniversary Book does not really clear up the situation about Nanna's father.

    Something I should say outright is that I bought this book because while making a post about Nanna's parentage I found an excerpt from the wiki that seemed pretty cut and dry about the whole thing, the excerpt being;

"While it is commonly believed that Nanna and Diarmuid may have different fathers (Finn and Beowolf respectively), it is stated in Fire Emblem's 20th Anniversary Book that her biological father is whomever the player married Lachesis to, and that Finn is more of her adoptive father. Still, since Finn is among Lachesis' prospect lovers, there is the chance of him being her biological father."

Thing is I could not find where exactly this claim comes from, so I shelled out 60$ and got my hands on the book. The problem however, is that I do not have the slightest knowledge on how to read Japanese. So I had to resort to using Google Lens to try and translate what the book said, and it was far from perfect. Google lens had a hard time seeing the smaller symbols, would frequently refuse to work, would show previous things that it already translated instead of what I pointed at, and when it did work the translations would be generally awkward since it's using Google Translate.

    However when I did find what I was looking for I was pretty disappointed, but these were my findings;

The book gives a family tree for the major nations of Jugdral, and in the Silesse family tree it has Ced listed as Lewyn and Erinys's son since that's how he is portrayed in Thracia 776.

But for the Agustrian family tree, nobody is listed as the father of Nanna or Diarmuid, presumably because they don't want to definitively pick Finn or Beowolf.

Also strangely Jamke is listed as Munnir and Cimbaeth's nephew, and Batu's grandson. Despite that being not at all how he is portrayed in FE4.

This is where I should remind you that Google Translate is not perfect, since while translating Finn's bio it mentions him "returning to Japan with his lord".

It also doesn't give much to go off of regarding Nanna's parentage. It makes Finn sound more distant than a biological father, but that's kinda grasping at straws.

Underneath Finn's entry is where we get the real juicy details.....kind of.

the book puts these little \"If......\" sections under optional pairings worth mentioning. Finn and Ced are the only Jugdral character's who have one, while almost every Tellius character with a paired ending (including Ike's pairings) gets one.

It acknowledges the mystery of who Beowolf is referring to in his CH.5 talk (Eldigan or Finn), but it doesn't attempt to answer that question. It also sides with the "Nanna calling Finn "Father" doesn't inherently make him her biological father" argument while still claiming Finn could still be her father. and it also doesn't acknowledge the Beo Sword or the fact Diarmuid doesn't interact with Finn at all.

And Nanna's bio is also pretty ambiguous, too.

Finn being called her father in the same way that Eyvel is called her mother makes it seem like he's meant to be adoptive, but once again it's left pretty unclear.

Beowolf and Fergus were put in the same section as Lachesis, Eldigan, Chagall, and Lachesis's children, but that's likely because they didn't know where else to put them.

The book treats Beowolf claiming that him and Eldigan \"go way back\" and that he asked him to keep an eye on her as something that is true. Besides that, his section isn't very helpful.

Fergus's section doesn't shine any light on the subject either. it also choses to treat Beowolf being his father as just a rumor, with the truth being unknown.

Here is Ced's "If......" section, which......also ignores the Beo Sword.....

    https://preview.redd.it/dit6acsqx2s71.png?width=1524&format=png&auto=webp&s=1f43d12bf3d7f16031f80d7ea716b2dfcfe6b204

Maybe I just didn't look hard enough, or maybe Google Translate misconstrued the meaning of some of these sections, but either way the book didn't really clear anything up besides acknowledging that Finn may not be Nanna's father. I also didn't find anything outright saying they have the same father despite the wiki saying so.

If anyone wants to see the Japanese versions of these pictures as to more effectively translate them I have them here. and if anyone wants a picture of a specific part of the book, I'm happy to help.

Do you think Fire Emblems dragons are born like humans or are they hatched from an egg?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 05:16 AM PDT

This is a question I've thought about a lot because in a lot fantasy settings dragons are born from an egg but then you've got the branded from the Telius games and like if Robin marries Tiki in Awakening that just kinda make that weird.

Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones Character Crossword (No Hints)

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 06:50 PM PDT

I have made an FE8 Crossword using all of the playable, non-bonus characters in the game. It is a hintless crossword, and I believe it should be possible to solve without any guesswork necessary.

    https://www.sporcle.com/games/Jonoabbo/fire-emblem-sacred-stones-character-crossword

If you are stuck on where to start, there is only one unit with an 8 letter name

    Hope you enjoy!

How come they stopped including multiplayer on the Fire Emblem Games?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 06:32 PM PDT

They had it on Blazing Blade and Sacred Stones. I mean yeah it was super basic but it was still fun.

Huge missed opportunity with Three Houses.
