THEORY: Edelgard actually thought Dimitri was a girl...for almost 10 years

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 06:37 AM PST

Alright. Ready to have your socks knocked off?

So, there's been a popular idea making the rounds recently: that Edelgard's reaction to Dimitri's dagger gift at their post-timeskip diplomatic meeting indicates that until that point, she hadn't realized that the Dimitri she'd known from her academy days was the same person as her childhood friend and "kingdom noble" first crush. The theory continued on to say that this was a result of Edelgard's severe childhood trauma causing her to repress memories of her early life, including Dimitri's identity. However, I'm putting forward an additional layer of interpretation that is fully consistent with the original.

What if Edelgard just...thought her dear childhood friend way back then had been a girl? Like...the whole time?

Think about it. Dimitri has grown into a chiseled young man by the events of the game, sure, but it's well documented in his support with Catherine that he was commonly and repeatedly mistaken for a girl in his youth. And I mean, just look at him. Dude seriously benefited post timeskip from cutting contact with whatever barber he had back in Faerghus. It's far from inconceivable that upon their first meeting all those years ago, a young and disoriented Edelgard might have assumed this squeaky young lad was a manicured - if somewhat training-oriented - princess like herself.

Also, in the flashbacks and in her brief moment of reminiscing in her goddess tower scene, Edelgard never once refers to her friend's/first love's gender (I'm presuming she was referring to Dimitri when she brings up a "kingdom noble" whose name she "can't say" - which, as the theory goes, is because she had repressed that detail).

One might now argue that she did know his name, as shown in the flashbacks, and that since Dimitri is a uniquely masculine name, she would've likely assumed his gender from that information.

But let's take a look at where Edelgard is coming from, and what the linguistic conventions of her homeland are. "Dimitri" is a name taken from IRL Russian, where it is rather common as a male given name. Faerghus is a bit of a linguistic anomaly, with noble house names derived from French, Spanish and Slavic languages; Adrestia is a similar amalgam, but they have key differences. The one that's important in this case is that there are no Adrestian names that have Russian roots (and no, Ladislava is a Czech name). Where am I going with this? Well, think of it this way: there's no evidence that Adrestian-born Edelgard would have had the knowledge or exposure at that point in her life to assume that "Dimitri" was typically a boy's name.

Dimitri could've still been Edelgard's first crush if she thought he was a girl; Edelgard is canonically bisexual. This is just my speculation, but her crush on Dimitri might have been the first time she realized she was attracted to the same sex, which is why the feeling of attraction itself - more so than the name - still stood out to her in the goddess tower, from among all her hazy memories.

Ultimately, this is not inconsistent with the evidence the game presents us with, and it can still fit in with the theory that Edelgard repressed her memories of her childhood with Dimitri due to trauma. It adds a dimension to the scene at the diplomatic meeting. Edelgard not only forgot about Dimitri after Arundel whisked her away - she never made the connection between her childhood friend and the Blue Lions house leader...to begin with. She just never considered that they could be the same person. In her fragmented memory, she just happened to have had a pal/crush/stepsibling(!!) in her youth, who was an entirely unrelated female noble.

So, at the diplomatic meeting when gruff PTSDimitri presented her with the dagger for the second time, Edelgard's first realization was that her enemy, in front of her, had in fact once been her childhood friend and first love. Her second realization?

Oh shit. That was a dude the whole time.
