So is Ferdinand (von Aegir) the most broken unit in Fire Emblem as a whole, thanks to Confidence and insane evasion stacking?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 12:43 PM PST

Being a "Dodge tank, bro" à la Lyn from FE7 is generally seen as a joke to try and validate a somewhat mediocre character as being better than they actually are, but in 3 Houses, being a dodge tank is not only viable, but is arguably the single most powerful archetype in the game, with the ability to completely null and void any and all sources of damage, even on Maddening. Enter Ferdinand von Aegir:

    • The crux of Ferdie's ability to be "invincible" lies in his personal skill, Confidence, which grants a flat 15% evasion to the character whenever he is at full HP. And given that - with the right setup - he is actually untouchable, he'll never lose that evasion bonus. This is the highest possible evasion boost from a personal skill, and is why Ferdie is arguably the best character in the game.
    • If you enter Ferdie into the White Heron Cup, he'll gain access to the exclusive Sword Avoid +20, which, as you'd expect, grants a flat 20% bonus to evasion when he wields a sword. And for some god-forsaken reason, evasion stacks additively, meaning that Ferdie's already sitting pretty @ 35% avoid. But we're not done yet:
    • Wyvern Lords/Falcon Knights are already one of the best classes in the game, given the insane mobility and Canto shenanigans, but the class also grants a flat +10% avoid. Not only that, being in a flying class such as the Wyvern Lord boosts the flying skill, and when that skill hits A+ grants the broken Alert Stance+ skill, which gives a whopping +30% avoid when deciding to just "Wait" instead of attacking. Meaning that, if we make Ferdinand (von Aegir) a Wyvern Lord, we're sitting at an insane 75% avoid while we wait.
    • Relatively early in Chapter 7, you can nab an Evasion Ring from either Claude or Dimitri with a thief, or you can wait until Chapter 13 (1st chapter of the timeskip) and get it from one of the enemy drops regardless of route choice. This ring grants +10% avoid, and when we give it to Ferdie, he'll now hit a whopping 85% evasion.
    • The Battalion, "Jeralt's Mercenaries" is literally the first battalion you'll get in the game, and it grants the user, among other things, a flat +15% evasion when at level 5, meaning that we've already hit 100% avoid when we give it to our noblest of nobles. But we're still not done, as certain attacks can have a bit over 100% accuracy:
    • Hitting A+ in Swords (something Ferdie is likely to do thanks to wanting to use swords to abuse the Sword Avoid +20 we got in the Heron Cup) grants the user Sword Prowess Lv. 5, which, among other bonuses, grants +20% avoid when using Swords, meaning that Ferdie hits an insane 120% avoid, which is the highest flat avoid stat without factoring in Speed stats, speaking of which:
    • Ferdinand (von Aegir) has an impressive 50% speed growth, placing him as either the 6th or 7th highest speed growth in the game, depending on if you see Cyril's speed growth as 40% or 60% (including DLC, Ferdie ranks 9th as both Jeritza and Anna have higher speed growths at 60% and 55%, respectively). Given that Speed directly dictates evasion, and Ferdinand has the potential to have one of the highest speeds in the game, he is able to relatively consistently hit at least 30 speed per playthrough, granting an additional +30 avoid, resulting in a final avoid stat of...

    >150% avoid. Not a single enemy unit in the game can hit that accuracy, even on maddening. So while Seth may be a monster in FE8, and Robin being, well Robin in FE13, neither can say that they can, without a doubt, be immune to all sources of damage regardless of difficulty.

    Side notes:

    • Even ignoring Avoid, Ferdie is a solid unit all around. Thanks to his budding talent, he is the only unit with access to both Seal Speed and Seal Defense at once while he's a Wyvern Lord, allowing him to send some pretty debilitating debuffs for your squishier units to snipe down.
    • Decent speed, strength and physical bulk allows for Ferdie to be a solid physical wall, and among the Black Eagles, he is the best at doing so.
    • He is a bee.

    I underestimated FE Three houses

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 04:48 PM PST

I got this game for Xmas and I was slightly disappointed because I was looking to get pokemon since I don't think pokemon is worth paying for at its current state so getting it for free would be nice. Anyways, I am so happy I got this game instead.

I went in blind and knew nothing about FE, it's universe (if it has one), or if the games are even connected, but hot damn this game is AMAZING. I'm at the beginning of chapter 2 and will play this game twice more to cover all houses. I started with black eagles for one reason, Edelgard and the story is pretty top notch.

Just wanted to show my appreciation for this game and will look into more games under the FE name.

    Any recommendations would be great.

Edit: I meant Part 2 not chapter 2. Sorry.
