Merric: Archanea's Eternal Optimist Posted: 09 May 2020 11:58 AM PDT Merric is a character that occupies an interesting place in the greater Fire Emblem series. He's not only Marth's childhood best friend, but he was also the very first playable Mage unit. His legendary Excalibur tome has been brought back time and time again in countless games (even far outside the greater Archanea canon), and he's even formed a sort of recurring archetype of his own in "the cheerful, studious mage that joins early on," leading to the likes of Azelle, Asbel, Lugh, Ricken, and Annette, among others. Generally, from what I've seen, people who know the Archanea side of Fire Emblem have usually at least heard of Merric in some form. On the first Choose Your Legends event he even scored the ninth highest spot among the Archanea cast. And yet, despite all of this, character discussion surrounding Merric is relatively hard to find. Personally, as Merric is my second favorite character in the series, I wanted to give him a bit of a spotlight. So...who IS Merric? As stated previously, Merric is Marth's childhood best friend. The two grew up together in Altea alongside Marth's older sister, Elice. Altea's place in Archanea's greater political landscape informs a lot of its social customs. It's a vassal state to the Holy Kingdom of Archanea; it's allowed full internal independence, but it still answers to the crown. This sort of dynamic was born from the relationship of Artemis, the first princess of Archanea and bearer of the Fire Emblem, and Anri, the founder of Altea and the man who used Falchion to slay Medeus. The descendant of Anri must always be ready to be called upon by the descendant of Artemis in a time of need. In this way, with Altea being Archanea's proverbial and literal sword, it has a culture that deeply values knighthood. One of Young Merric's lines in Heroes even confirms that this is due to their admiration for the great King Anri.
Merric, meanwhile, did not aspire to be a knight, despite coming from a noble Altean family. Instead, he wanted to become a mage, something that was almost looked down upon due Altea's deeply traditional nature. However, Merric's dream was supported by Marth and Elice, which inspired Merric to follow his dreams and study magic at Khadein. This is discussed in his B support with Linde.
However, it's of note that despite rejecting traditional knighthood in favor of magical study, Merric still wishes to protect his lord and lady, but not out of a sense of duty or responsibility...but out of compassion and comraderie. In a sense, while he is an unorthodox one, he's among the most knightly characters in Archanea. Merric deeply values his friends. One might assume that a soft-spoken, bookish mage would be a very introverted character, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Many people have a very rigid view of introversion vs extroversion. It's a bit more complicated than just thinking, for example, introverts are like Bernadetta and extraverts are like Caspar. Those characters are introverted and extraverted, respectively, but introversion ≠ social awkwardness, and extraversion ≠ hyperactivity. Instead, it involves how different people expend energy inside and outside of social settings. Whereas introverts generally "expend" energy in large groups, extraverts "recharge" in the same situation. The inverse is also the case. Merric himself could best be described as exhibiting affiliative extraversion: he's amicable and affectionate because he values social warmth, which would be how he "energizes" himself, to keep the analogy going. Merric thrives off of positive social interaction, and as a result, deeply values those who are close to him. In addition to the aforementioned Marth and Elice, Merric also immediately hits it off with Linde when they first meet in Shadow Dragon.
This would be the start of Merric and Linde's friendship, which would last well into the future as shown through their supports in New Mystery of the Emblem. Linde is always the first one Merric goes to to discuss magic, knowing that she, too shares an interest in it, while Marth openly admits he has no talent for it.
Fire Emblem Warriors even has Marth and Linde talk about Merric in their support conversation.
So Merric's kind of a dork. He loves his friends so much that he endlessly praises them to his other friends like a proud dad with a wallet full of family photos. As alluded to previously in his conversations with Linde, Merric is incredibly studious, and at Khadein he managed to establish quite a rapport with both students and faculty. If Merric is used in Shadow Dragon to recruit Wendell, his professor, they greet each other like old friends.
However, with that being said, there was one particular student who ended up despising Merric, and that would be Arlen. Arlen is a character who has a severe inferiority complex masked as a superiority complex, if that makes sense. He's Merric's opposite, his foil: while Merric actively tries to grow closer to his allies, Arlen sees comraderie as a weakness, and pushes others away. In one of New Mystery's DLC missions, Wind and Thunder, Merric is joined by Arlen, Linde, and Etzel as they investigate reports of sightings of Gharnef's bishops in the Mamorthod Desert. And it's here that Arlen's insecurities are the most readily apparent.
Arlen's support with Kris further elaborates on his disdain for Merric. While everyone else at Khadein hated Arlen for the attitude he had, Merric was the one person who tried to connect with him. He tried to befriend him even after Arlen rebuked him time and time again. And all the while, Merric was excelling far more than Arlen was. Merric was everything Arlen hated. He was kind, compassionate. He was accepting of all, and saw everyone as a potential ally instead of a potential enemy (to the point of attempting to recruit Michalis to his cause in Wind and Thunder), something Arlen saw as horridly naive. And of course, there was Arlen's breaking point: when Wendell gave the Excalibur tome to Merric instead of him. This is what kicks off the events of chapter ten of both Mystery of the Emblem and New Mystery of the Emblem. Merric's good natured trust in others finally puts him in an incredibly dangerous position: the entire Mage Corps of Khadein is attempting to kill Merric on Arlen's orders after he brands Merric a traitor.
Arlen felt betrayed by Wendell. He'd been so strong and so dedicated to his magic, and yet Merric, an upstart Altean mage, inherited Excalibur. This Baron Mordo-esque motivation blindsides Merric, who had no intention of succeeding Wendell. The position of Archsage is perhaps the greatest position a mage can achieve in Archanea, right above the position of Pontifex. Arlen reluctantly views Merric as his superior in magical skill, even if he'd never admit to it, but is incredibly short-sighted due to his own narcissism. He can't possibly fathom a mage of Merric's abilities not wishing to become the Archsage, because while Merric lives to help others, Arlen is entirely self-serving. When Wendell tells Arlen that he'd always been planning on having him as his successor, his worldview shatters. Merric mentions in his Kris supports that magic has to resonate with its user, that each spell has a "personality." Wendell had given Arlen Thoron and Merric Excalibur because Excalibur required a wielder with compassion, a trait Arlen didn't possess. And when Wendell compared Arlen's attempt to kill Merric to Gharnef killing Miloah, Arlen realizes the severity of his actions, and joins Wendell and Merric in Marth's army. There is, of course, one other relationship Merric has that I want to explore in detail, and that's his relationship with Elice, Marth's older sister and the Princess of Altea. As mentioned earlier, Merric was incredibly close with Marth and Elice growing up, but his feelings toward Elice in particular went beyond friendship and were instead far more romantic in nature. Growing up, Merric was a very frail child, due to mostly staying inside and reading. On occasion he'd get injured, and Elice would heal him back to health thanks to her staff training. He quickly grew very attached to her, and she became his main inspiration for wanting to study magic. He wanted to protect her just as she had protected him. Upon leaving Altea for Khadein, Merric was given a gift from her: a home-made good luck charm to signify their bond and her belief in him. When Altea fell during the War of Shadows after they were backstabbed by King Jiol of Gra, Elice stayed behind while Marth fled with a small garrison of knights. Meanwhile, Merric was still in Khadein. Upon hearing of the fall, he finished his training and immediately left to find and regroup with Marth. Marth recruits Merric at a village in the Lea of Aurelis, whereupon Merric actually shows a bit of bravado, which at first may seem inconsistently at odds with his established character.
However, during chapter twenty-four, this boasting is shown to be a facade, a mere ruse to mask his worry over Elice. After Elice is rescued from Gharnef at the end of chapter twenty-three, she and Merric can have this conversation.
Elice is able to tell right away that Merric was putting on a brave face for her. Merric is normally very calm and collected, but Elice in particular has a habit of being able to cut right past his defenses and leave him as a flustered and nervous mess. She knows the real him, the Merric that's kind and compassionate, and she loves that about him. After the War of Shadows, Merric returned to Khadein to finish the remainder his training so that he could return to Marth and Elice's sides. What nobody could have anticipated, however, was Altea to fall again during the War of Heroes. After finding out that Elice was once again in danger, Merric blames himself for not being there for her, joining Marth to help save her. One of the characters who is most helpful in supporting Merric during this time is Linde, as shown in their A support.
Despite realizing that her own feelings for Merric are unrequited, Linde is still there to help pick him up when he needs it. He needs to keep moving forward, in spite of the worry overcoming him. To move into Mystery/New Mystery endgame spoilers a bit, when Medeus has the four clerics (Lena, Maria, Nyna, and Elice) captured and in a trance ready to be sacrificed, Merric is needed to save Elice. And when he sees her under Medeus's control, he breaks down.
One thing to note is that what breaks the spell is Merric showing his vulnerability alongside his love for Elice. Just like Elice said in Shadow Dragon, he's not the type to cut down hordes of enemies in her name. He's kind and gentle, and here that's on full display. His admittance to his own shortcomings and his genuine love for her saved her, and they embrace...much to the embarrassment of Merric once he realizes everyone is watching. After Medeus is defeated, Merric moves into the Millennium Palace alongside Marth, Caeda, and Elice, teaching at the Magic Academy that the latter established there. Elice's ending also states that she entered a blissful marriage. Seeing as Merric and Elice can theoretically die in the final battle, it doesn't say she married Merric explicitly, but the implication is rather direct here, in my opinion, seeing as the two love each other. Merric is a pretty great character. He's kind, calm, and compassionate, but also a bit of his own worst critic. He values and adores those who are close to him, but also begins to fall apart a bit when they're gone. He gets super focused on his magical studies, but also makes the time to share his findings with those he cares about. All in all, he's a character that I absolutely adore, and is one of my top three favorites, fitting nicely between Chrom and Edelgard. And because he doesn't get talked about a lot, I wanted to just show my appreciation for him here. A lot of times Archanea characters get a bad rap for being underdeveloped or without character all together. While that's true for some, it's definitely not the case for all, and it's not even a problem exclusive to Archanea. I think Merric is a noteworthy counterexample to that claim. And to wrap it all up...I love his hood hat thing. Just look at it. How could you not? It looks comfy. [link] [comments] | ||
