Everyone Plays Fire Emblem - Week of April 9th, 2021

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 09:32 PM PDT

Welcome to the next installment of EPFE! This is a casual space for discussing any ongoing Fire Emblem (or related games) playthroughs. Screenshots, impressions, frustrations... gameplay stuff that would otherwise be removed as a standalone post under Rule 8 can be shared here.

While you can of course ask for advice here, specific questions might get faster responses in the General Question Thread here.

As always, remember to tag your spoilers, and have fun!

Last week's thread can be found here.

What are your favourite fun facts/obscure trivia about the Fire Emblem series?

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 04:20 PM PDT

I'll start out with a couple of my own, but I'm curious about what comes up!

    1. All of F!Kris's exclusive support partners wield bows. Now that's good taste.

    2. Saber is the only male in Shadows of Valentia that learns Seraphim. Try out mage Saber someday, it's fun!

    3. Despite looking alike, Touma (from Tokyo Mirage Sessions) is 3cm shorter than Sylvain. However he makes up for this height difference by being at least 3x more respectful to women.

    4. Summer Takumi's damaged art is the only official art of Takumi with his hair coming undone

    5. Chrom's Falchion has 1 more might in Fates (Before Awakening) than it has in Awakening. 6 might vs 5 might.

Edit: Oh I have another one! Laslow, Odin, and Selena (and consequently Soleil and Ophelia) are the only Conquest exclusive characters that can reclass into Hoshido classes (Ninja, Samurai, and Sky Knight respectively). Fitting for the characters not native to the country.

Tellius gameplay localisation changes deserve more appreciation

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 11:54 AM PDT

Due to localisation of Fire Emblem games being quite contreversial to this day due to Fates english versions removing some features and changing much of the dialogue and even 3H receiving fan backlash due to choosing to interpret some lines in a different manner than most would agree was fitting, it's not hard to see why localisation is still a contreversial topic to this day. However, today I wanted to make a quick post on some of the good changes the Tellius english versions made to the original japanese games. Now, gameplay changes aren't new to the english version. The english version of FE7 has x2 weapon effectiveness and FE8 localisers buffed Seth while nerfing Amelia. However, I believe that the Tellius games had the best gameplay changes overall.

NOTE: I'm talking purely about gameplay changes. No Black Knight warp powder malfunctions or Soren and Ike not being as explicit or anything like that.

    Buffs to infantry units

Did you know that in PoR, classes that can only use one weapon such as: swordmasters and snipers had a hidden +15% crit modifier added to them. Well, I wouldn't blame you as it's hidden and as such is hard to notice, but this was not present in the japanese version. Yep, even the swordmaster class didn't have it's iconic additional crit in the japanese version of PoR. Now, why did the devs buff mounted units compared to the GBA games, while nerfing infantry units? IDK. Now, this crit boost is minor and doesn't help these classes very much in the mount dominated metagame of PoR, but it's still a neat addition, that's worth mentioning.

    New weapons

Now, this is an interesting one. The Dawn Brigade is the first group you play as in RD and as such it's not hard to see why the characters of said group stand out as important to some players. However, while Sothe and Micaiah are integral characters, the relevancy of Leonardo, Edward and Nolan drops off a cliff both story wise and gameplay wise after the middle of part 1. Luckely, the english localisation team decided to throw a bone to the OG members of the Meme Brigade by giving them all personal weapons. Yep, the Caladbolg, Lunghnasadh and Travos are the only weapons to be added ever in the localisation. And ohh boy if they aren't appreciated. They have excellent stats and good effects (OK, maybe not Cadalbolg) which definetely help make Nolan, Edward and Leonardo better units, while also giving Daein it's own unique regalia as well.

Fun fact: Cadalbolg is actually referenced in the text of one of Edwards' Cipher cards, despite it not being in the original japanese version. Take a look if you're curious.

    Promotion changes

This is the biggest change IMO. In the english version of RD, advanced classes can reach their 3rd tier promotion by leveling to level 20 or using the master crown. However, this feature was not at all present in the japanese version. In fact, there you could only reach 3rd tier promotions by using master crowns, not by reaching level 20. This decisions baffels me, considering the size of the cast of RD and how units can still reach 2nd tier classes through leveling. I understand the idea of making 3rd tier promotions feel special, but the problem is that there are only 7 master crowns in the japanese version. And instead of making the game more balanced it just means that you'll be using fewer units as, similar to the more limited BEXP of RD, it's a mechanic that already benefits good units, instead of helping out weaker units. This is definetely a change I can get behind.

    Conclusion

Overall, I'm not trying to say you have to love all of these changes of whatever, I just want to show some appreciation to the localisation teams for making changes I believe improved the Tellius games. You're free to disagree, but I just want you to remember that localisers are still people and that you shouldn't get upset over some minor changes with the localisations when there are always much better things to get upset relating to FE. Like, the fact that wyverns aren't weak to arrows in RD. Who made this change, was it you Maeda!?

Three small things from Kaga's FE games i just find cool.

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 12:55 PM PDT

    1. Anti-Turtling Characters: One of the ways Fire Emblem tries to incentivize players to not turtle is through enemy reinforcements. And i really like the way Mystery of the Emblem Book 2 and Thracia 776 do this through the characters of Astram and Galzus. It's a very minor thing but having the typical FE anti-turtling reinforcements be accompanied by these strong bosses with an actual name and portrait and who, in the case of Astram, the player themselves is already familiar with just leaves a far more lasting impact. And as these two characters are also recruitable, it creates some good emotional build-up to the catharsis of finally getting to have them on your team late-game after the stress they put you through in the earlygame. (Even if Astram is a bit of a underwhelming unit when you get him)
    2. Divergent Promotion: In most FE games, characters promote to one specific class or there is a choice given such as in Gaiden/Shadows of Valentia, Sacred Stones, Awakening, Fates and Three Houses. And usually it's pretty straightforward, Class A promotes to Class B, or Class A can choose to promote to Class B, Class C or Class D, the most different you get is stuff like "Class A's promotion options are based on gender" or other stuff like that. Well, one aspect that i will already admit was pretty minor but was there in Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776 was the fact that not all promotions followed the "expected" path. Chulainn and Scathach are both Myrmidons but unlike Ayra and Larcei they promote to Heroes, Tine is a Mage but promotes to Mage Fighter rather than Mage Knight like her brother. This was a minor thing in both games with only a few characters "deviating" but honestly i'd love a Fire Emblem game that went wild with this for tons of characters. A game where characters of the same class can all promote to vastly different classes in unexpected ways.
    3. Unconventional Main Campaign Escalation: Most FE campaigns follow a simple structure for their campaigns, which is why i just find it really effective when you have things such as Mystery of the Emblem Book 2 having you face Dracoknights from Chapter 2, or Thracia 776 throwing you in jail in Chapter 4 and telling the player to figure it out themselves how to escape. And it doesn't stop there, both campaigns go on to throw more and more unexpected turns at the player. Kaga, even when making FE games that followed a "traditional structure" like FE3 or Thracia rather than something experimental like Gaiden or Genealogy of the Holy War, was still not afraid to throw tons of curveballs at the player in the main campaign even in stuff as early as the first few maps of the game, and i just really like that.

Same Name Slam #1: Battle of the Lyns (Lyndis vs Ethlyn vs Lene)

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 06:08 AM PDT

Hello and welcome to a new series which I definitely didn't come up with because I was bored! Fire Emblem has gone through a lot of characters, and naturally it has come up with characters with similar names. This series is going to be a battle between the characters with similar names to determine which one is truly the best one. The format will be similar to the Royal Slapfight series in which points are awarded for people commenting in favor of the character; higher effort comments get more points. 2 points will be awarded for each high effort comment and 1 point for each low effort comment. There will be no bracket - just one winner for each name! Each round will last 24 hours, so this round will last until around 13:00 UTC tomorrow, after which the next round will be released.

On today's episode of the Same Name Slam, we have the Battle of the Lyns! This is a bit of cheating since technically there aren't multiple characters that have their name start with Lyn, but I've made a lot of corny jokes about these characters so why not.

First off, the Lord from Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, Lyndis! Most people probably know who she is but if you don't, she's one of the three lords from FE7. She's a member of the Lorca tribe from Sacae, but is drawn to Lycia when two knights come to send her a message…

Secondly is the troubadour from Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, Ethlyn! She is the younger sister of Sigurd who joins him in order to aid his fight against the Verdanians and heal his army. She's also married to Sigurd's best friend, Quan.

Finally is the dancer from Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, Lene! This pun takes a little bit to explain: Lyn's name in Japanese is リン, while Lene's name is リーン; their names are only one character off in Japanese.

Now for the rules. The rules are simple and as follows:

    1. Do not be mean to other users; be nice and avoid the ad hominem.

    2. Any argument that isn't sexually explicit is allowed. As LaqOfInterest said, "There are no stupid arguments." Throw down whatever you have! (Yes, ad hominem towards the characters themselves is allowed.)

    3. Mark your spoilers.

Now that we've gotten through the post, let's get rolling! I'm excited to see what you guys have.

FE7 Redux Tier List Round 19: Nino and Jaffar

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 12:15 PM PDT

Welcome to Round 19: Nino and Jaffar

Each round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give clear explanations as to why. Feel free to comment on each other and discuss why you agree or disagree. Be polite, and remember, this is all in good fun. After the 24 hours, I will review all the answers and understand what the consensus reached has been, posting the result in the next round. If there is no clear majority, a tally will be made. If a tie ensues, well the round will be extended until a tiebreaker comment appears. At the very end, a hub finalized tier list will be created, with links to each and every one of these rounds, providing full analyses for FE7 units as well as a good solid tier list for the community.

Last Round resulted in Harken in B tier and Karel was a tie between D and E tier. So this round, along with voting for Nino and Jaffar, you will be voting for Karel in D or E tier.

    Tiers Being Used:

    Fantastic Performance: S

Insanely useful from the get go, always a dominant force from the moment they arrive and require little investment if any. Contributes in a significant enough manner that they always sticks out and have a substantial role.

Includes: Lyn Mode Florina, Nils, Ninian, Marcus

    Great Performance: A

Extremely useful and always a good addition to a team. Doesn't require too much investment and if they do then it's enough to make them stand out compared to most units. Biggest things holding them back are that they either don't stand out as much as the S tiers or even with investment they aren't as dominant in their role as the S tiers.

Includes: Lyn Mode Sain, Lyn Mode Kent, Lowen, Fiora, Heath, Pent

    Good Performance: B

Is pretty useful and has some sections of the game where they stand out and help. Overall solid, isn't the most significant unit, but definitely contributes in a helpful way. Aren't the highest priority when it comes to deployment, but will definitely be one of your main choices for deployment to fill out your team at multiple points in the game. Biggest things holding them back are good but not amazing stats that may cause them to be dropped later on for other units, not the best class access, not the best weapon access and maybe not the best availability. Good, but has some significant flaws that hold them back from being great.

Includes: Florina, Lyn Mode Lucius, Hector, Matthew, Oswin, Priscilla, Raven, Canas, Isadora, Hawkeye, Geitz, Harken

    AOK Performance: C

Perfectly average, they can make contributions at base sometimes, but investing in them doesn't tend to improve them very much . They may not be deployed for the whole game, but it doesn't hurt to deploy them most of the time either. At the end of the day they are just serviceable, neither a detriment nor a priority when it comes to being used and are essentially filler.

Includes: Sain, Kent, Serra, Erk, Rath, Lucius, Farina

    Iffy Performance: D

Can perform a niche role and do something, but generally aren't that useful. Don't really do much and if they do something unique then it's usually done much better by a bunch of other units. Severely outclassed by most other units and while they can do something, it's usually pretty bleh in execution.

Includes: Lyn Mode Lyn, Lyn Mode Dorcas, Eliwood, Guy, Dart, Legault, Louise, Karel

    Lame Performance: E

Straight up bad, no way around it. There are very few places where they are actually useful, and they are actively difficult units to use effectively. Can probably do something at base such as heal other units, rescue canto others or chip stuff with effective weapons but it's such a bare minimum contribution that calling them good would be a stretch. They can do something, that's the most you can say for them. Other then that they're bad.

    Includes: Lyn, Dorcas, Wallace, Bartre

    Meme Performance: F Rank

These units are just really bad, complete bottom of the barrel. So bad that even with an insane amount of investment they either end up still bad or at best incredibly mediocre and this is accounting for immense babying and all stat boosters going to them. E ranks can at least do something that counts as contribution. These units can't even have that as a claim to fame, they're so bad that they just do little if anything in a non casual/non meme context.

    Includes: Wil, Rebecca

Next Round will be Vaida and Karla.

Fire Emblem Complete Map Discussion Week 1-2: FE16 (non-CF) C13 - Reunion at Dawn

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 07:45 PM PDT

If you haven't seen it already, here's a Strawpoll to determine the map we'll be discussing for Week 3. Feel free to leave any suggestions for maps you'd like to look at (that aren't already listed in the index thread.

    Objective: Kill Boss

At the beginning of the battle, only Byleth and your Lord (or Seteth on SS) will be available. Part of your house will arrive on the left on turn 3, with the remaining appearing on the top right once you have reached column 9. Upon killing the boss, he will respawn at one of 3 random locations, with the goal being to kill him before he escapes.

    Discussion prompts

    • Was this map fun to play on?
    • Was the reunion handled well?
    • Could this map have been improved? If so, how?
    • What did you think of the boss' escape?

    Starting Three Houses

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 03:31 PM PDT

Hey, I'm a longtime FE fan, have played almost every game from 6 onwards and finally got my hands on Three Houses. I'm super excited to play it and have avoided most spoilers (other than that there is a timeskip) and am playing mostly blind. I see that there's a lot of mechanical changes for this game (even the name change of skill to dexterity is a little jarring) but I'm super excited to jump and see what's new.

I didn't expect to have to choose my route right at the beginning and I'm a little stuck. I was originally going to go Yellow because I like the characters there the most in general but after doing a bit of reading, it seems like people recommend Blue first as it has the tightest story, and that Yellow should be played later as it's most focused on lore and revealing secrets. I'm still trying to decide between the two but am leaning Blue because I've heard you can recruit the other students anyways.

My main question is how that works - if you steal away every student from the other two groups, isn't that kind of lame from a lore perspective? And if you ever run into the other groups later then they'll only have the leader and one or two other students? And in terms of romance (I'm playing as a male), you can S-rank any female student from your own house and other houses as well? If I was playing the blue route, I could recruit someone like Hilda and S-rank them? I've heard you can recruit and S-rank teachers and even Rhea as well, is that a smooth process that makes sense in the lore or is it super awkward and you should romance a student? For context, I went with Lucina in Awakening and didn't find it weird to do that.

edit: Thanks for the responses. I think I will go Yellow then, you guys have convinced me to just go with my initial gut reaction. I guess I'm mostly apprehensive of getting the first run "correct" because you only experience a new FE once, and it's been so many years since I experienced Fates for the first time and who knows when the next one will be.
