Pointless Ramble: Have Trainee Units effectively replaced Ests?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 01:03 PM PDT

Ever since FE12 we've seen quite a few old recurring unit archetypes be more or less phased out. It hasn't been since Awakening itself that we have had a proper Red and Green Cavalier duo, and as noted by some since Frederick we've barely had anything resembling a strong earlygame Jagen-esque unit. Now, im not gonna talk about this being good or bad, instead, i want to focus on something: The lack of Est units and how i feel a separate unit archetype has been brought back to "take their place" effectively.

So, Ests, we know them, come late game, have above average growths, low viability because even if you invest in them heavily they'll only be slightly above units that could already get the job done, fun to use after their rough start but there's not really a lot of chapters to use them on after they have been trained. Now, what i find interesting is not just the fact that they haven't really been present since FE12 besides Echoes which as a remake has... Est, but that another "Heavy Investment" unit type has become a bit of a mainstay just as they left: The trainee.

Trainee units are a term that was mostly popularized because of FE8 and is typically used to describe units that start in a "special" class that is intentionally designated to be weak and simple, but they can branch out into other, stronger classes with investment and in theory, have great potential.

Now, every single game from Awakening onwards features at least one unit like this:

    • Awakening itself features Donnel, who was a bit of a weak execution, mostly because of low caps and lack of reclass options that lets him keep his Lance EXP he has built by the time he can change class to begin with. In hindsight with games like Fates, SOV and Three Houses, IS probably should have allowed Donnel to either promote directly or given him more reclass options.

    • Fates has Mozu, who is a Villager like Donnel, unlike him she can promote directly which is nice, still very far from the most viable unit around but a better execution of the concept.

    • SOV, as a remake of Gaiden, features of course all the Villager units, though one that stands out is Kliff, who besides Faye has the lowest initial stats as a Villager, but who can promote to pretty much any class that isn't Cavalier and excel with it during at least one portion in the game. Even Mage, often considered the worst class for him due to a start that is very, very slow to say the least, will at least let him contribute lategame even if it is still not as good as something like the Mercenary class for him.

    • Three Houses is entirely built around this concept technically with the various students that will make up the majority of a player's roster, but one example that could be argued is the "designated" "true" Trainee is Cyril, who has the Aptitude skill just like Mozu and Donnel, and like them has a slow start even compared to your other units. Still he can grow pretty strong if you put the time and effort to invest in him in order to make him a Bow Knight or Wyvern Lord even if it's not super worth it for many.

Now, why one over the other? Why phase out one "Heavy Investment" archetype just to put in another? Well, i feel it kind of has to do with one thing: The newer games kind of don't really give you lategame units. Newer FE games still have big expansive rosters but most of it is given to you in the first half, or in the case of Awakening, a good chunk of it is given in Paralogues. Mostly because in previous games, lategame units were often used to be possible replacements for units that died during a player's run, while the newer games are designed assuming that the players will keep using their units from the beginning all the way to the endgame, both because of Casual Mode and the assumption that players who play on Classic always reset anyway.

Now, how do i feel about this? I honestly don't mind it too much, well, Trainees effectively replacing Ests that is, i do have some thoughts on modern FE not giving much in the way of lategame units but that's for another day. But in general i do think it feels better and more fun to use some kind of heavy investment units if there's actually enough of the game left for me to use them extensively in rather than just a few maps of the endgame. So this shift in specific is one that i honestly kind of prefer.

Sorry for the pointless poorly-written ramble, just had to get it out of my head.

finished my first ever game of fire emblem

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 03:28 PM PDT

So I never fire emblem until three houses, I didn't know what to expect, but I enjoyed every second of it. Three houses is the first game I ever played and I hope to play more in the future. If I go into detail about everything I loved this post would become a novel. All I will say is I love this series.
